Window flappers
Good evening everyone,
Was wondering if anyone has ever dealt with the window flapper issues on a 56 Victoria? Here's what is going on with mine. The one on the passenger side works fine but the drivers side, don't turn down all way when the door shuts. The reason is that the wing vent is no longer ridged enough to pull the flapper down against the window / wing vent. Not sure if just over the years the wing vent has gotten sprung or if it could possibly be broken down inside the door. When the door is shut and window down, I can get a hold of the rear of the wing vent and pull it toward the inside of the car and get the flapper to come down. It's not like it is a huge issue for me, but just thinking I might like to fix it at some point and wondering what someone else has done for this. I believe this is a common problem on the 56's. Thanks, Kevin

Re: Window flappers
Open the door on the passenger side and look up at the flapper. You will see a little bumper clip on the backside. Notice the angle of the clip here. Now go over to the drivers side and locate that same bumper clip. Often these become weakened due to being used more than on the passenger side and can become bent. If so, try to re-bend to match the angle of the clip on the passenger side.

Re: Window flappers
My 58 Pacer had a rubber band like thing on the passenger side but none on the drivers side. Cut a little electrical tape narrower, made two wraps and sealed it up with a little heat shrink and all is well.

Re: Window flappers
If you're talking about the flippers on top of the door opening - yes they are a real PITA. I rebuilt mine a few years ago. The pivot springs and plastic bumper that goes on the clip tab should still be available from Mac's. Can't remember where I got the cat whiskers (aka fuzzies) but it was a cut-to-fit piece, just had to remove the remnants of the old ones then slide the new ones in and re-crimp them.
Chevies & Pontiacs also use the same type of flippers in '56-'57 timeframe, I think some Lincolns do too. I heard they all came from the same supplier. The Tri-5 site has a sort-of rebuild how-to for them, take a look maybe it will help: http://www.trifive.com/forums/showthread.php?t=106518 |

Re: Window flappers
Well,
I thought I'd update everyone on this post. As mentioned earlier, the wing vent window isn't as rigid at it needs to be in order to move the flapper down. The reason is because the window frame is broken along the door on the front. It's been like this for awhile because a PO tried to JB weld the broken area and the JB Weld broke! I suspect that one reason it's like this is because I believe a PO, when shutting the drivers door, most likely was grabbing the top of the window and shoving the door shut. Over time it eventually broke the wing window frame. Now I have to locate one. There is one on eBay but it's like $550. Hoping to find one that don't deflate the pocket book so bad Kevin

Re: Window flappers
I think that vent window frame is made of cast pot metal or malleable iron, chrome plated over. Possibly that is the same part on the '56 Ford Vicky, '55 Crown Vicky, '55 & '56 Merc Marauder 2-door Hardtops. Not 100% sure. The '55 & '56 sunliner and '55 Victoria 2-dr hardtop will not work.

Re: Window flappers
Thanks guys. I believe the Mercury Montclair has the exact top as the 56 Fords. So maybe...

Re: Window flappers
Kevin if you need a vent window frame assy I might have one. I'd have to look for it and see if it's rebuildable. Let me know. Yours is a 64C body style (tudor hardtop), correct?
