My new 28 Sedan
Hi guys, My name is Marty
Just wanted to introduce myself and show you my first stock Model A. Before and after a little rubbing. I got this from a family friend of a guy who passed away. I'm not sure if he was taking it apart, or putting it together. The story I got was it was a driver. It had no radiator hoses, generator or front splash apron, the emergency brake rods were disconnected and the rear spring was loose, also the headlight wiring is disconnected, other than that it appears to be complete and very solid! I'm also not sure of the compression, I can turn it fairly easy with the crank? I'm on a very tight budget (unemployed), so for now I'm just going to try to get her running. So far I have replaced the hoses and cleaned and set the points and plugs etc. I will need to buy a new distributor cap and coil wire tomorrow. ( I will replace it all once I know it runs, the budget you know). I also need an ignition head and key. I will obviously change the oil and clean the gas tank. Can I attempt to start it without the generator and the headlight wiring disconnected, and with out a key? Is there anything else I have missed? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks guys, nice to be here. Marty |

Re: My new 28 Sedan
Since you're close to Bert's, that will be a big help for you to get it running. How do you know the switch, coil wire and cap needs to be replaced? I don't replace any GOOD parts. You can start it without the generator, but don't run it very long. Once the generator is belted up it will need to be wired correctly into the charging circuit or it can burn itself up.

Welcom to the addiction!!!!
If this is your first Model A, I recommend that you find a local club and or get some manuals. The reason I say this is that the A wired and tuned a little different than cars from the lat 50's onward. But, sounds and looks like you are off an running with a great looking car. Mike

Re: My new 28 Sedan
Looks like that will make a nice car good luck with it!!
There is a threaded stud missing in the cylinder head that keeps the distributor in tight , Don't forget to replace it John Cochran |

I do not have a key for the switch, the coil wire looks a bit strange, like a lamp cord with the ends stripped and I can not get into the distributor cap to clean it. I tried a pencil erasure with no luck. You can bet I will not throw any parts away. I am very lucky to close to Bert's, Steve and Phill are very helpful, but I don't want to be a constant pain to them. Thanks Tom Last edited by Not George; 06-26-2012 at 08:34 AM. |

Re: My new 28 Sedan
I fired her up for the first time today! Very excited!
I know my progress seems very slow but I am on a very limited budget. The kid I bought her from dropped by and handed me the keys, that was a relief, because I don't want to spend any more than I have to or replace parts that don't need replacing. I had to replace the battery,I got a $25.00 second. I timed it according to Les Andrews book, replaced the distributor cap, put a sleeve and pin on the distributor, replaced plug wires and fired it up. The starter makes a gawd awful racket, but the engine started surprisingly quick. Any way, just wanted to check in and report my progress. |
