1928-29 front spring U bolts

Question about 1928-29 front spring U bolts - All the U bolts I have are a D cross section, but the problem is they all have stripped threads where the nut tightens. All the parts houses I have checked only sell U bolts with a round cross section. Does anyone know of any parts houses that sell D cross section U bolts? If I can't find any, I will buy some that have a round cross section, and keep looking for D cross section bolts at swaps.

Check the swap meet page. I have a good set of original bolts with the plates listed. I will bump it to the top of the page. There are pictures of the bolts and plates.

Thanks Bob, but these are the round cross section ones. The ones I am chasing are a D cross section.

Thanks Frank, but I think the postage to Aus would be a bit too much. I'll keep looking locally.

I understand what you're saying Steve. The postage from our local parts vendor will be a lot cheaper than any postage from a US vendor or used parts from the US.

I am not a fan of repro parts, but with a little effort, I think you could convert round repro U bolts to look and behave like original U bolts by using a Dremmel to grind off the round bottom where it fits on the crossmember. I am sure the U bolts would still be strong enough once modified. Just a suggestion.

you could always change the starter crank bearing to the later type that uses the u bolts if you can find it easier than the d bolts,page # 419 service bulletin.

Maybe you could buy some that have a round cross section and have a local blacksmith modify them.

Have you tried Bert's Model A Center in Englewood, CO? It's worth a try and he should be able to tell you what the shipping is. If anybody would have them I'd say he would.

Sometimes the shipping quote is more than a return flight fare.

I know a bit of am exaggeration, but US post is a rip off.

And what I have bought from US vendors they have taken a loan of me by packing it in a huge box with about 30 old newspapers as filling.

At least I had something to read on the dunny while I fumed at the rip off and laziness.
