Installing an oil filter
If I loosen 3 head bolts to install an oil filter, do I risk a head gasket leak?

Re: Installing an oil filter
I doubt you will incur a leak. Just be sure ton use thread sealant when you reinstall the bolts. I used the bolt sealant shown. No leaks after 2 years.
When I modified this oil canister to fit the early style heads on my 8BA I used these special bolts and installed them one at a time and then installed the oil filter. That way I can now remove the oil canister without having to remove any head bolts. You can buy them on line. Also, I apply a very thin coat of anti seize to the bolt shank and then apply sealant over the anti seize on the bolt shank so the bolt won't "seize" in the "head hole". Non-hardening Permatex and the sealant shown below work "excellently" as thread sealers. For these 3 bolts I used the sealant shown below. Last edited by 19Fordy; 07-14-2021 at 08:21 AM. |
