Default early carb help

hey guys, sorry for this being a little off topic, but I know there's lots of smart people here, and I need some help.
ok, Im working on a 47 Plymouth, the carb is a carter "ball and ball" single barrel.
first off, when I took the carb apart, I kept all the gaskets and "o" rings so I could match them up,damned if I have a little black rubber I cant remember where it came from.
its flat on one side and tapered on the other,
I spent a hour tonight looking, took the carb apart and back together, cant find where I got this from.
any ideas ?
Secondly, this carb has a "step up valve" it works off intake vacuum, you can see the vacum hole in the base in picture 209
well the intake doesn't have a vacuum hole, cant I just drill in to the intake, to get the required vacuum ?
thanks guys,

I have never seen one of those carbs previously----however, it appears as though the vacuum source, to the base, is provided by the gasket opening.

I wonder if the rubber seal is for a vacuum orifice at the parting lines of the components?

Go to the Old Car Manual Project website. You should find a section on carburetors in the index. Quite certain a Carter Ball and Ball would be covered; the site has exploded views to look at.

thanks for the replies guys, I looked at the online manuals, still no luck finding the rubbed seal.
I even found this video on you tube, doesn't even show the rubber.

I'm just goanna drill the manifold to get the vacuum needed.

I remember seeing a few of those carbs way back. B&Bs had a dashpot set up to keep the engine from dying when you let off the throttle but I don't remember what they used for a seal on them. Some also used electric solenoids for the dashpot and for kick down if so equiped. They had several designs of rivet plugs too but I don't remember seals like that. Some kits had flat seals and tapered seals but it's been too long to remember much about where all the stuff goes now. My old Motors manual doesn't have a break down it just has step by step pictures of the disassembly and reassembly process.

That gasket looks like it allows for the vacuum source. I wouldn't drill any holes if it were my project.

hey rotorwrench, yea your right, the gasket allows for the vacuum, damn but not much, I did put a small v notch in the manifold where the gasket notch is, not much, just big enofe to make me feel it would get sufficient vacuum.
I took it back apart one more time, just for grins, still couldn't find a spot for the rubber, I'm starting the engine tomorrow, guess Ill see what happens.
Thanks for the help.
