Just so you know, with the exchange rate at .77 US dollars to 1 AU dollar, that $6.62 is $5.09 American. Still stout, but not quite as scary.

Tinker,
That track surface has been prepped to take water. Most tracks over here are watered with a long boom hanging off the side of the water truck running on the infield. Then the road grader levels it ready for racing.I would imagine this process is repeated several times up in Alice Springs because of the evaporation due to the heat

Actually our exchange rate is only 72c to USD $1 at the moment realistically if you were to exchange you would get less than 70 cents now ..aghhh PLUS this rip off government is taxing another 10% on top of anything coming in so to buy the simplest part is like buying gold at the moment ..Pfft!

I like roundy-round cars. explains the tilled clay/dirt in the picture. Thank you for clarifying.

A couple of days back I stopped the night at an abandoned urainium mine township,no buildings left just the slabs and car ports, a fascinating place, they said it’s was safe to work there but a mate and his wife and daughter worked there, the daughter died from a pile of cancers and stuff, they are both still ok.i walked all over the place ,thought there maybe some old ford stuff around, but all I found was a Holden thermostat housing.
Well I,m. Close to home ,and should be there tomorrow.
The last few days have been great!and makes me appreciate even more how good those old ford engineers were, that engine just hums along, day after day at 53-55 mph,no noise nothing uses no oil or water.
And don’t ever complain about fuel usage, met a couple at a rest stop, they were in a new Toyota 4wd v8 diesel towing a big caravan, we compared tow vehicles and caravan, both of us had come across the Barkley hway with a head wind! My fuel was 23 ltrs per 100 klms, his was 33-35.,I told them their V8 was too new.
I have seen all the usual critters ,kangaroo, emus, huge wedge tail eagles,as well as camels, dingos, gonna and shingle back lizards ,no snakes though.
Now I,m back in Queensland the road kill is every where!i counted 36 kangaroos in on 3mile, so definitely not advisable to drive on dusk or at night.
One thing is good the road trains are now only two trailers.but the roads are sure not as good.
I will travel a couple of hrs more today ,then stop at a pub for a bought meal (first one on my travels)and watch the footy semis on the tv there

Maybe you need to add a geiger counter in the tool kit. Yikes, interesting stuff. Kind of makes sense in a way why madmax was filmed there. Very interesting land.

If you want to throw in a kangaroo picture, roadside or hoppin' that's okay with me.

Glad you're home well. Thanks again, for sharing.

Well ,watching the footy was a bad move!spent too long there!my idea was to just drive a small way down the road and stop for the night,
I came out of the pub, pitch black and hosing down, drove about 40 ks with the 6 v headlights, stopped for the night in a gravelstockpile, next to the rail line, all night coal trains motored by, 120 wagons each.
About the biggest drama of the trip happened this morning!lost my outside mat!i forgot to tie it back on,
Home today

At night they tend to go at right angles to the road at speed so they cut across your with no warning. If you get one at mid bound, its about windscreen height.

Hitting one is the equivalent of a small/medium size deer through your windscreen.

Gets your full attention - while its beating the ber-jinkies out of you.

Sounds just like whitetail deer here (100-200 lbs). They seem to be drawn to the lights. Jump out of no where, will run along and then dart out.

Here you can eat deer. how's kangaroo?

I had some kangaroo last March when I was down there for their Speed Week. It was tasty but mine wasn't cooked properly and was a bit tough.

Seen many deer around Salina this year? We hunted there in the 1970's.
