Default Floor Board Support Iron Rivets

The Model A floorboards are supported by Support Irons. The Irons are secured to the wood floorboards with rivets.

Question, How to I "smash" or secure the the rivets to the back of the irons?.

The heads of the rivets are on the wood.

Would it be better to replace the rivets with fasteners? I have never worked with rivets.

Thanks,

The floorboard rivets should be semi-tubular. These rivets have a hole in the end that need peening with a semi-tubular rivet setting tool. What you need to correctly install the rivets is a semi-tubular rivet installation tool. The tool should be the correct size for the diameter if the rivet. The tool rolls the edges over. There are rivet gun semi-tubular rivet tool bits and hand tools. Hand tools work fine and you don't need a rivet gun for them. Below is a link to Snyder's semi-tubular rivet tools. All you need to do is insert the rivet, flip the floorboard over on a hard surface so the head is on a solid area and hit the tool with a hammer to set the rivet. A drop of oil helps make a nice "roll" on the peen.

A drop of oil on the tool always helps the rivet to make a nice clean roll over.
