Driving along, then boom and crunch
Driving along in my 30 coupe today when all the sudden it made that sound that costs money. Far as I can tell, the rearend locked up with no warning, which in turn broke the transmission case. So now I'm on the hunt for replacement parts. Whoo!

Let us know what happened why you open it up.

Re: Driving along, then boom and crunch
I'll bet your rear end is fine, and the tranny locked up and broke the case. A locked tranny would lock up the rear end temporarily as well!

Re: Driving along, then boom and crunch
With the rear end in the air can you spin the wheel? I've see faulty brakes lock up the rear end in one direction, then release in the opposite direction.
How fast were you driving when this happened, and what gear were you in? If you were in high gear I'm thinking the problem originated in the tranny. This might help you out, and it's very close to you: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ford-Model-A...9770f6&vxp=mtr Last edited by Tom Wesenberg; 01-28-2013 at 05:45 AM. |

Me for transmission also. I'll bet a piece of a gear tooth broke of and wedged in the main cluster.

Where do you live in Auburn. I'm just off Military and 272nd. Are you a member of the Gerties? There are several model Aers nearby, with parts. Chuck |

Re: Driving along, then boom and crunch
This just happened to my Father's 30' P/U, turned out the right hand E-brake carrier took the hit when the brake bands caught while rolling through an intersection.
Managed to dawg it to my place where we tore into it. Found the carrier was an earlier type without the support ears and was not reinforced with the extra plate. Found a later one and got it back on the road. It jammed the right e-brake lever so hard that it also set the passenger side brake on as well. Said it went with a loud BANG! |

Re: Driving along, then boom and crunch
I was driving along in high gear when it happened. The rearend is toast. Up in the air, only one tire spins. Spiders are gone. Wedged in the pinion and locked it up, broke the case on the tranny. Had to use the tractor to lift the rear up to get it in the shop.

Re: Driving along, then boom and crunch
I still wonder if the tranny didn't hatch out first. It's hard for the spiders to hatch out just driving down the road, but anything could happen. It really doesn't matter which came first, as now they both need to be repaired.
Any pictures? |

Re: Driving along, then boom and crunch
Well! there's your problem.
Looks like the drive shaft nut stayed in the game holding the pinion to the shaft, so the pinion bearing nuts got loose? never good when Mr. Driveshaft shakes hands with Mr. Ring Carrier. Was there any warning noises before this event? Looks like the rear end housing can be repaired and cleaned up? How did the transmission fair? |

Re: Driving along, then boom and crunch
I remember when that happened to me.......Yea along time ago....
My brother and I were drag racing on Grand Avenue in Chicago....He was driving a 30 roadster and I was in My old wide bed pickup Yep we were revvin up to see who could get to the other side of the intersection the fastest. Of course I wasn't goin to let him win and he had the same idea about me!I revved and popped the clutch and let it rip.......Only to hear a loud bang and watch him go flyin by. By the time we got it apart we found I had broken the drive shaft by the snap ring groove for the speedo gear.......Oh well never did that again....Oh to be young and stupid |
