Default Replace steering box

Hi Guys, I have a 35 ford that steers like a semi. All the front end parts are good including the king pins. Would like to change the steering box but retain the original look. Any suggestions?

37 to 39 box filled with 1/2 synthetic grease 1/2 synthetic doping is the easiest to do. There are the repro mounts available but you can slot one hole and make the original work. if you want an original mount PM me

Although not very exciting, why don't you try making the existing steering and suspension system PERFECT. You are going to need to do most of this anyway. The word "perfect" means what it means, everything in the system brought up to original specs and tolerances. There are lots of NOS parts to help you with this. As mentioned, radial tires are a big help. If you don't believe this, find a Ford friend with an early V8 that does have perfect steering and go for a ride or get him to let you drive it. My 32 and 40 are both bone stock (with radial tires) and drive like a dream. Remember that any non power steering car will be hard to maneuver at no speed. No one parallel parks anymore , so that should not be the issue. Besides, making something perfect is a fun project. Give it a try first.
My opinion and experience

My winter project was replacing the steering gear in my 35 with a 39 steering gear filled with JD corn head grease. I could fell the difference as soon as I backed out of my driveway.

Yes radial tires, I know that doesn’t help.

There have been many previous posts made here and on the H.A.M.B. about upgrading '36 and earlier V8 Ford's from "fixed sector" to "rolling sector" steering boxes, and bolting everything else that's original back in place such that it's very difficult to determine that anything has been changed, with end results being very favorable. Do a search and see what comes up.
