The 7.1/7.2-volt comes straight from the Lincoln Mercury Overhaul manual for the 1949 thru 1951 Lincolns & Mercury cars.

Post Script: I went back and checked and I was wrong about the voltage. The voltage limiter setting is from 7.2 to 7.6-volts at ambient temps between 70 & 80 degrees F. The generator is rated at 7-volts but the regulator setting always falls in a range depending on conditions.

i would remove the battery disconnect, and put the cable back on the battery.

YES ! Those green knob type battery terminal disconnect switches will give trouble when they are older and have had some fair amount of OFF-ON cycles. The main body of the terminal is a diecast zinc, brass coloured metal , NOT solid brass. The female internal thread will become rough on its surface and the result is a bad connection. The originals of these were solid brass about 20 years ago but now they are made in CHINA crap. OK to use for a while as long as you know about the possible issues with them. Regards, Kevin.

Thanks everyone for the advise. I did go on the run, about 250 miles sun up to sun down through out the North Idaho panhandle and the car did great. It still cranks slower when warm, it may be the starter or a weak battery battery. I will also look into the battery disconnect, I did not know that those things wear out. But it does always start, and I tested the battery the whole drive and it was always at 6.4 when not running.

Those battery cutoffs like the one you show are notorious for not making good contact

put a temporary volt meter on the car and see just what the voltage is these are very easy to hook up then you will be able to run test to see where the problem is volts can be shown different them amps and less trouble to check.
