Re: Floorboard seal placement
Here's an original 1928 floorboard. The seal gets tacked with small nails to the side and bottom edge. |

Re: Floorboard seal placement
When I installed mine I nailed the cloth seal to the side and bottom of the floorboards. I had seen it in one of the books but am sorry to say I don't know which one. They fit very snug doing it this way.

Re: Floorboard seal placement
thanks, as for the front, does it go right around the perimeter? 3 of the sides? I'm not sure where it starts and ends.

Here's a couple more pictures that should show the webbing better. The toe board doesn't have webbing on the bottom edge, where it meets the floorboard, and the front floorboard doesn't have webbing on the front edge. |

My friend Makita and I are pros at duplicating that planer chatter on hardwood! My new friend Commercial-san Hitachi may do better in the future.

Re: Floorboard seal placement
Here is my original 1928 toeboard made with dovetailed boards. Even though some of the welt is missing, you can see the tacks that held it in place. Welting was used only on the full width sections along the top edge. So, the ~ half thickness part in the center shows no sign of welt ever being used there. |

Re: Floorboard seal placement
I'm in the process of replacing my floorboards. The welting on the original floorboards measures about 1 3/8" wide. The new repro welt measures 1" wide (and appears thicker). The reproduction floorboards are made from 3/4" plywood so the overlap onto the bottom of the floorboard is only about 1/4" at best. It's difficult to get the overlap tacked down. Has anyone had the same issue? Have you used a different type of welting?
I just measured the thickness of an original floorboard at approx. 5/8". I think that's correct. |
