I think it looks like one I had. It was a BW but used by the orphan makes like Willis, Studebaker, etc.

Yeah, that's definitely one of the Borg Warner conversions. There used to be one or more folks that performed those conversions but they have fallen by the wayside for the more modern manufactured types and T-5s being more popular. They were basically the tail shaft & housing out of a BW 3-speed & overdrive. They generally use a cable for lockout and an electric solenoid to make them shift up.

Looks like the handiwork of Lloyd E Young, from Ohio. I just talked to him yesterday morning. He still does the Borg Warner R10 conversions.

Specifically that is the R-10 unit from the back of a Rambler. Rambler units are used since they have a flange at the back with bolt holes already. Without the factory flange you have to weld a flange onto the cast iron tail housing.

Does Lloyd Young provide the OD and torque tube, or does the customer provide the cores?

You ship your torque tube, drive shaft and coupler, and he sends it back with the OD in it and the wiring to make it work.

Klawockvet: Your photos look SIMILAR but not identical to the BW R10 set-up in my '47 sedan coupe. (i.e. where's the solenoid unit) See attached photos; markings on my BW case read "R10B-1G; W.G. Div; SB3; 2 J152". Lloyd Young thinks he did it many years ago. Last talked to him two years ago .... he was still working then at age 83. Very knowledgeable OD man.

Also, let me know if you need wiring diagram and O&P manuals.

PS: Llyod says use 140 weight gear oil in these.

that sure is a good looking set up... to me it looks a lot more compact than the mitchel and a quite a bit more simple than the columbia... Mr Young is quite creative....

Anyone know what to use to attach the OD shafts to the torque tube shaft?

That shaft is cut and welded to a sprocket, the original shaft has a sprocket welded on, and there is a chain coupler that holds the two together.

I have one of these units in my '40. I know not to operate the unit in reverse in overdrive, but if the solenoid is off and one forgets to pull the lockout handle before reverse, what would happen? I'm assuming the unit would just freewheel and not damage anything but I'd like to be sure before I start driving with it.
