The old bonded shoes I removed from the front were plenty thick, almost new thickness but had cracks all over them. They must have got very hot or just bad material.

Just to follow up on this up, you have to take into consideration how old the linings are and what quality other than OEM were the quality of the service replacement linings (if they were ever replaced).

I've used all kinds of pliers over the last 50 yrs. on brake springs, as I didn't have brake pliers, & and have never seen a broken spring
