Pinion bearings. help needed
I started my new project. I opened up this banjo rear. Late30's. All the bearings are rusty. I got everything apart except the pinion gear and bearings. The nuts are off. It sides back and forth about a 1/4 inch. How do you get this out?

You will need to press out the pinion gear and bearings with the outer race as a package. I made a press out of scrap metal I had.

Re: Pinion bearings. help needed
Either with a KR Wilson tool or bridge the banjo in a press and push on the case torque tube end with the small end of the pinion against a short shaft that will fit inside the small bearing and be stationary. The pinion, race and both tapered bearings will come out as a unit. You will need a large bore piece of pipe or something that will fit over the end of the pinion sticking out where the nuts go to push on the case that is larger in diameter then the pinion race. I know that is convoluted but basically you push the pinion out from the rear (small end)
