Default Mallory distributor

Is this a correct Mallory for a 49-53 Flathead? Is that what the model # ZB stands for? And what are the 2 ports for? Vacuum line? Tach drive?

Just wondering..

Your distributor is for a 49-54 flatead Ford V8. The hole in the centre close to the bottom of the casting should have an oiler plug in it. The one off to the side opposit the condenser is the vacuum port.

Thanks. So do I just hook up the vacuum line from the carb to this port? Used to the 49-53 loadamatic with the vacuum advance.

this is a stock engine with a single carb.

I don't know if the Mallory requires ported vacuum (the carb) or manifold vacuum. It may need the stronger signal of the manifold vacuum. Hopefully some of the carb & ignition gurus will chime in here. Charlie? Ken? Bubba?

Strick,
That dist uses manifold vac. If it is like others I've used it has a plunger
similar to that used on '32-'48 Ford distributors. By all means disassemble it ,frequently
the vac plunger is stuck so be careful.

Strick,
WD 40 ,that's a good place to start...carefully push the plunger back...assuming it is stuck....and work it back and forth. The spring behind it is
not adjustable so I guess what you get for a curve is what you get.
Long live the Chevy conversion distributor...not as pretty but mighty
effective.

Strick,
I can't believe I just 'said' that....the vac brake is not readily adjustable
the curve is quite adjustable....geeze senior moments.

No. That Mallory is a centrifugal with a vacuum operated brake. (High vacuum on trailing throttle overcomes the spring pressure on the brake piston and allows an increase in advance). It does NOT want ported vacuum. Tap it into manifold vacuum.
