Difference between pre 1949 flywheel and 49-51 flywheel

What are the differences between the pre 1949 flathead flywheels and the 49-51 flywheels used on the 8BA engines. I have been told they are not interchangeable. Want to buy the correct one for my 8BA

the flywheels for an 8ba style motor have the bolt holes for the pressure plate drilled all the way thru the flywheel. on the earlier motors the holes are not drilled thru. thats how to tell them apart, but there are other differences too so they do not interchange

The 59A series have a different starter ring and it's placed differently. 8BA family flywheels mostly have drillings for the 9.5 inch Long type clutch with exception to station wagons, police cars, and trucks but the flywheels can be redrilled for any size clutch. Mercury cars used the Borg & Beck 10-inch clutch so they are different than Ford. Also keep in mind that the 8BA family began in 1948 with the first bonus built trucks while the cars were still 59A series engines. The 8BA car type flywheels are still out there.

All '49-'53 Ford and Mercury flywheels are inter-changeable; it's the clutch type and size that are different. Ford cars and trucks used 2-3 sizes of Long style pressure plates, while Mercurys used Borg & Beck design.

Here's a visual showing SOME of the differences, with the "EARLY" variation being the one on the left. The guys above have given you some good info. You can see that the six clutch bolt holes are NOT drilled all the way through on the early wheels. DD

There is a difference in the depth of the crankshaft flange witch places the late flywheel closer to the back of the early block (oil pump Cover) it also has a different location for the starter bear. All this makes the flywheels not interchangeable. I might have this backwards, But???

Nope, it's Sky King's old Cessna T-50. Below is an old Twin Beech 18 at roughly the same angle. DD

I’m old enough to remember sky king. I’m not a pilot but worked in atc in the AF and FAA.
