40 Dual Exhaust Routing
How are you guys with a '40 routing the L/H header pipe when running duals? Seems like the clutch linkage and brake lines are in the way from running it thru the frame cutout like on the other side???? I plan to run Red's headers on my wagon.

Re: 40 Dual Exhaust Routing
I did it on my 40 coupe. I used 1-3/4" pipe and threaded it through as best as I could - it is very tight. I had to put a dent in the pipe to clear either the pedal or the relay lever - not sure which now. The coupe was a body off job which made it easier. On my 41 pu I chickened out and sent them up the right hand side. I used a Merc manifold on the right with an inlet at the front and a single outlet at the rear.

Reds sells the pre bent L/H header pipe that's used with his headers. I used his system on my '39 some time ago and it fit perfectly. Ken |

Re: 40 Dual Exhaust Routing
^^ The pedal layout is different between a 39 and a 40. Not saying it won't work in a 40 but the 40 is tighter due to the relay lever.

Yep. I agree but I believe that Reds has taken that into account. To be sure, and e-mail or better yet, a phone call to Reds to confirm the fit would be in order. Ken |

Re: 40 Dual Exhaust Routing
Like Mart, I also used the "dent" approach. Twenty years, still clears fine.

Re: 40 Dual Exhaust Routing
I recently installed a set of Reds headers & exhaust pipes on the '40 coupe. They fit fine. It is a little crowded on the driver's side, but orienting the pipe the right way clears with room to spare. No dents needed. As side note, I used 12" " Mellow Tone mufflers from Mac Van. I tried 18" one, but not enough room in the X-member without cutting the frame. I had the tailpipes mandrel bent by Tubular Automotive in Weymouth MA.

Re: 40 Dual Exhaust Routing
I just had duals installed on my 39, 22" Brockmans. Love it. Anyway, I checked with Red's regarding his pipes. They only work with his headers. They don't make them for stock manifolds (in case that's what you are doing)

Re: 40 Dual Exhaust Routing
On my 40 the pedal arm hit the pipe. I heated it red hot and slammed the clutch down to dent it. That was 25 years ago. Still working great .
