Default 1940 gas pedal

What is the best way to remove the gas pedal from the rod going through the firewall?
I do not want to break it.
I am installing a new floor mat in a 1940 coupe.
Thanks Tom.

Yesterday, I unhooked my 40 gas pedal from the accelerator rod that inserts into the top of the gas pedal as follows:
1. Squirt some WD-40 or liquid dish soap onto the area where the rod inserts into the gas pedal.
2. Wrap some duct tape around each jaw of a small pair of vise grip pliers.
3. Clamp the vise grips onto the metal rod right below the place where it goes into the gas pedal.
4. Hold onto the vise grips very tight and twist and pull the gas pedal to separate it from the rod. It's a very snug fit. The accel. rod has a metal button on top that presses into the gas pedal. In the photo you can see where the metal rods snaps into the firewall mounted actuator.

Excellent advice from 19Fordy. I like Ruglide for a lube.

19Fordy, what are you using for floor board seal ? They appear to fit well.. I understand the ones offered by the vendors don't fit.

russcc: I bought those floor board seals from BOB DRAKE many years ago. They fit perfectly. They were part # 01A-7011508/9 and were $25 a pair in 1990. Now they are $85.
He still sells them. DRAKE's transmission Cover Floor Seal, part # 78-700286 back then was $5.00.

I had three sets in a row from Drake about four years ago that fit terribly. He and I went round and round as he "had never seen that before"... his usual "excuse". I can't speak to how they fit currently. If he is still getting them form the same shop in China as he was then, then most likely, you'll need to cut and glue them to fit properly.

Goody Gumdrop. Don't forget to put a dab of dish soap in the
hole in the gas pedal when you go to reinstall it. Also, protect the accel. rod
by taping the vise grip jaws
