Lost my title ,, no help from DMV
I have owned my woodie for maybe forty five years. Registered it in Virginia somewhere around 1970 and at that time purchased antique tags. Drove the car for maybe ten years and parked it. Since lost the title. Went to DMV to apply for a new one and they tell me they have no record of my car. Cannot apply for a lost title. No help from DMV. They could care less. I have thought about getting someone to write me a bill of sale and reapply. Is this the easiest way? Thanks Dick

Take your registration card to the DMV. Then see what happens. Good luck.

Re: Lost my title ,, no help from DMV
If you have a family relative in another state, have them check to see what their rules are.
If reasonable, have them license it under their name at their address AND YOUR NAME at their addressin in that state then "move" to your home state and relicense it. If that should happen to me, I KNOW that I can go back to South Dakota and have it licensed with another person AND ME, then move it down here. Done that and it works. Taxes are much cheaper there for me too. And of course you do understand tho.... just as soon as you do that.... Your orignal title will turn up in some obscure corner. Murphy's Law. Good Luck. |

This is definitely a time where a drive to a small rural office would pay off in better service.

Re: Lost my title ,, no help from DMV
Bringing the VIN up may not help. if the car has not been licensed for many years the information may have been purged from the system. Many states purge records after 5 years.

Re: Lost my title ,, no help from DMV
So you don't have the plate or any form of registration. And the VIN yielded nothing.
Seems to me that any one of these items would do the trick. Or did you just go in and give them your name. Plus do you still live in Virgina? As TJ stated many states are purging after X number of years. I know that title issue's in some states are getting strict but this seems strange. Aren't the Antique Tags permanent for the car? If so you would think that they would still be on record. Good luck and keep us up dated. |

I live in a small town next to a big city ~ its easier to bond or apply for a title in the city. These gals hete are strict ~ car club guys agree. Your mileage may vary

Re: Lost my title ,, no help from DMV
Have you been given form "VSA 12" ?
" Affidavit in Lieu of Title Certificate" Some DMV drones don't even know of this form. Do you have any old insurance papers? Old photos of car with tags on it? ,,,Tax records? Good luck,, keep us posted. |

Re: Lost my title ,, no help from DMV
Get ahold of a good member of the License Plate Collectors and purchase a correct year clear plate for your car. Drag it in and show it to them and tell them you need a duplicate title for that plate. Stand your ground and demand a supervisor if necessary. Bet you can get them to issue it to you. What's to lose but the effort?
It is time we stood up to these lame bureaucratic stooges!! |

Re: Lost my title ,, no help from DMV
Where do you live? Someone in our chapter found a DMV in Arlington, VA that was a little out of the way with someone who was a huge help in another difficult situation. I can inquire about that if you live in NoVA.

Re: Lost my title ,, no help from DMV
Thanks for all of the responses. Have enjoyed the forum for quite some time. I do not have a registration card for the antique tags. Virginia has been a title state for a long time. The reason I went to the DMV was to register 1935 Va. tags. This is when I began looking for the title. They tell me all records are deleted after ten years. I do want to keep it legal. About the woodie. I found it in Washington DC, no motor, painted black inside and out. I found a running 35 engine from a hot rodder friend. At this time I had fifty dollars in the car and fifty dollars in the engine. Remember this is forty five years ago. I have most of the body rebuilt now. Hope to have it on the road next summer. I will get the title worked out. I still live in rural Va. DMV people want to help but don,t know how. Thanks Dick

Re: Lost my title ,, no help from DMV
I live in Virginia. You can go online and download a form that is something like abandoned vehicle. Look thru the forms--you'll find it. Just look for the word abandoned. Fill out the form online. There is a I believe 30day waiting period while your serial number online is available. Assuming at the end of 30days there has been no problem reported to the DMV you fill out another form and you then get a document that you take to DMV. I've had to do this twice. Go for it.

Re: Lost my title ,, no help from DMV
The other day MikeV posted up this link showing licensing/titling info for all the states as published by SEMA/SAN : http://www.bipac.net/page.asp?conten...olbox&g=SEMAGA
Just pick your state and read. Va. has 73 pages of info so I'm not going to spend the time to dig through it, but hopefully your answer is in there, including the civil code number to help the DMV folk.

Re: Lost my title ,, no help from DMV
Not sure why you can't apply for a lost title. I'm sure they have encountered this problem before. If the abandoned vehicle forms will work then go for it. Some states require that the car be bonded (to protect the state) for 3 years or so, but the bond is cheap and will get you your paperwork .
