Default Re: What is a cure/treatment for squeaky fan belt?

All the suggestions about belt dressing to eliminate a squeaking fan belt are valid. However, I have never encountered the problem. I am running a 6-volt positive ground alternator, a Leakless Rupert water pump, and an aluminum fan.

One thing that was not mentioned is the alignment of the alternator pulley with the crank pulley and the water pump pulley. This is where I had a problem and it ate up a couple of fan belts until I remedied it.

What I did was modify the "H" shape bracket of the alternator to make it longer. I then stacked a number of washers on the mounting bolt. By shifting washers fore and aft I was able to bring the alternator pulley in line with the other two. This has prolonged the life of the fan belt.

Wipe a little ATF on the belt . You dont need to get to all the belt once the engine runs it will reach all parts . The ATF will not harm the belt or make it slip ,at least on my car .

You might try a cog belt.

The cog belt should work better with the smaller diameter of the alt. pulley. Might get rid of the noise.

Ideally, if you've eliminated: the water pump, generator, and others are fine, i.e. not making the sound and you wish to try some lubricant on the belt, would one apply it only to the outside of the belt or where the belt makes contact with the pulleys, or both?

a belt is not supposed to make noise. if it is determined that the actual belt is the cause possibly from age (dryness) or if antifreeze gets on it which causes them to be noisy, i would spend the 10 bucks and get another. soaping it is usually a temporary fix at best. when a modern comes into my shop i find out the cause of the noise then repair.
i know i am bucking the system of soaping them up but thats how i operate fix the cause
some keep a soap stick or such with them why? because the noise returns

Parafin will do it. Years back you could purchase a stick applicator from NAPA. It was Balkamp brand. But it is a temp fix. Maybe time for a new belt and use this for a back up spare?

Thanks again for all the replies.
My belt is only about a year old and has less than 3000 miles on it.
My alternator, fan, and crank pulleys are perfectly aligned.
The paraffin seems to have worked, but I've only driven about 50 miles since applying it.

Thanks, that is what I was talking about. I didn't know that you could still get it. I am glad to see that ACE Hardware carries it.
Thanks,

I had a little squeak, belt appears in good shape and it started about a month ago... would stop after about 10mins of driving... I put very little WD40 on a paper towel and rubbed it on two spots on the inside of the belt... NO squeak...
