George has it right on about grinding. And yes that is a lot of load for an A esp anything over 60 mph IMHO. I have been cross country and back several times (in a modern) and there is no shortage of considerable hills and worse along the way. Not sure if they went thru PA but that state is just a pile of mountains someone drew a pencil mark all around and decided to call it a state since they couldn't do anything else with it. I-80 is brutal and I-70 is not much better, and Missouri and a bunch of others are loaded, too. With that kind of load, and stock suspension components, every bump in the road is trying to find that non-existant radius on the grind of the journals....

According to yesterday's New York Times the car is being repaired in New Jersey and they will attempt to break the record again the last week in November - this time accompanied by a chase car.
