How to repair stripped bolt holes on engine block
Hi guys,
I noticed my car was spraying some coolant all over the engine bay today. I saw it was coming from the lower water neck (one that the water tube attaches to) I noticed the bolts were very loose. I tried to tighten them and they would tighten and then loosen, which is a sure sign of either a stripped bolt or screwhole. The bolt is fine, so Im assuming its the thread on the screwholes. Bolts are the right ones and are the proper size. How could I go about fixing this? thanks! |

Theo, I realize you say the bolt is OK but what bolt are you using? Can you find one that has 'rolled threads' instead of cut threads? If so they may correct your problem.

Re: How to repair stripped bolt holes on engine block
Thread inserts are a good repair, but if you don't have the tools or the knowledge to do it there is arepair that can work ---thestock bolts are usually shorter than the hole, there can be several undamaged threads deep inside, a piece of threaded rod, or a longer bolt with threads all the way, the idea being that the bolt is installed till it bottoms---not forced too much, then the nut is tightened ---it may look funny, but it is somethiing I have used many times with no problems ---if the looks bother you the head of the bolt can be cut off flush with the nut afterwards.
