Would like to bring my 1946 Ford 5W Coupe into The Barn
Hello Barners,
I would like to bring into The Barn my early 1946 Ford 5W coupe. It has been sitting in my garage for two years, and now is time to bring it back to running condition. The car is complete with all original parts but it has been sitting for about 25 years, has a good story with him, and does not run although the engine is not stuck. Please help me bring the car back to life. My kids and wife nicked named him 'Stanley' after the Cars movie cartoon character that founded Radiator Springs -a statue of an Ford Model T, because the car doesn't run! I have attached some pictures so you can see him, and I look forward to your kind advise as you been there, lived it, and continue to keep them running. Respectfully, Conrad

Re: Would like to bring my 1946 Ford 5W Coupe into The Barn
I have no idea why it doesn't run. According to the seller it was a running car when parked 30 years ago. It still has the original wiring, which has been hacked into it and it has dried out. Also, looks like the cooling system is shot too as the fan wobbles and there is evidence that it met the radiator. Tomorrow, I will check if it holds water or just take it out for a 4psi pressure check.

Re: Would like to bring my 1946 Ford 5W Coupe into The Barn
Welcome, nice car too. I would start by changine the oil, removing spark plugs and squirting a generous amount of Marvel Mystery Oil in each cylinder and letting it soak for a day and install new plugs or clean these ones. in the meantime disconnect wires (making note where they go so you can reconnect in the future)from generator and starter relay (not the batt or starter, but ignition) wire in seperate starter button or switch I prefer a switch so I can turn it off and be in control, if you do a button you need to figure a way to turn the car off such as a toggle leading to coil. You will only need new wire from batt to temporary switch, switch-starter relay, switch-coil and coil to distributor. This is just incase mice or other rodants have chewed your wiring and caused any to cross each other
Disconnect fuel line at firewall where the hard line meets the flex line and install a temp gas can with enough hose to keep it out of the way of harm and possibly back fire (1 gallon plastic can with a hose connected to the vent with a hose clamp work good but a boat gas can works best since they have a prime bulb built into the line but you would be relying on a fuel pump you have no idea of condition.) Don't fill with gas yet. After it has soaked oil for a day try turning engine by hand. If it is good try turning it over using the wired up ignition switch, (if good turn it over a few times to get the oil pump to spin oil on the rest of the internal engine parts. While doing so pull a plug wire and check for spark.) If all is good put in some gas in can and a dribble down the throat of carb and with a FIRE EXTINGUISHER CLOSE-BY try to start the car. If using plastic can don't forget to place can on its side so gas goes into line and you will need to open main spout for ventilation. You mentioned your radiator may be bad, no need to work on it yet, just dont let the car run long or get hot and you'll be fine without it just to hear it run. If it runs you'll have this part tackled and be able to move-on. I have left out some minor details expecting you already know, new batt, car in neutral, clean sediment bowl etc. etc. Please keep us informed, good luck

Re: Would like to bring my 1946 Ford 5W Coupe into The Barn
Welcom, do a compression check first. Put a little oil in the cyls first, WOT and a 12V bat.
If all the cyls are close and over 70lbs, you shouldn't have any trouble starting it. You WILL have to clean the tank and the fuelpump will probably not work so an electric pump will take care of that. Send the Dist to Bubba. Now you can take it for a ride. |

Also, leave the plugs out when you first spin it over. Make sure the cylinders have plenty of oil in them.
