1948 F4 value
The local irrigation repair/supply store has this none running 48' F4 parked out back. I hit up the owner on the possibility of selling it. There has been some modification done to the truck that have me wondering what it's really worth. The truck for the most part is rust free other than a couple of small spots on the front fenders. A PO has installed a Mopar engine and automatic trans, no clue what they are. In order to fit this engine a section of the firewall was removed along with original trans tunnel hump. It has a two speed rear which looks original, not sure if that would be electric or manual? The end of the frame rails appear to be shortened, how much rail should extend past the rear spring perch? Anyways what would this truck be worth?

Re: 1948 F4 value
A dollar more than scrap value. Really. With all the mods and the current condition, this beast will take more money to get it back on the road than it will ever command in resale value. This will be a labor of love - hope you can adopt it.

Re: 1948 F4 value
I bought one just like that for $600, paid storage on it for 3 years, then felt good to get my $600 back out of it. And mine had a Ford Script tail on the flatbed, too.

Re: 1948 F4 value
Its worth more then a dollar over scrap, even as a parts truck someone witha rough pickup could use a lot of parts. The bellhousing adapter is worth about $200 by itself if its adapted to the stock trans. MEL motors have a small cult fallowing ( i missed the auto trans part the first time i looked at it)

Re: 1948 F4 value
My dad bought one of these new. Used it on our farm. It had an Eaton two-speed axle and if I remember right, it was vacuum operated vs. electric. Engaging it was a little like shifting into a higher gear.

Re: 1948 F4 value
The F4 was a good solid 1-ton+ truck. If that engine is a 430 or even a 383/410 then it's kind of a unique set up. The transmission is likely an old Lincoln large case Cruise-O-Matic but that's only speculation. It's rough like any old truck that has been setting out for years so the price will reflect that. Most folks looking for old F series trucks, would want the flathead V8 but the truck may have had a 6-cylinder originally. The VIN number would tell that story.
My Pop's first grain truck after he took over the family farm was a 1948 F-6. Pop traded it in on a new dual tandem truck in 1977 and that poor truck stayed behind the Ford dealer for 25-years since no one wanted to buy it. My pop though about buying it back a few times but farming was a busy process so it never happened. Last edited by rotorwrench; 07-29-2018 at 10:53 AM. |

Re: 1948 F4 value
Hi; I have trucks cause they are Cheap to buy and Ok to cruise. those rims have the external locking rings and are Ok . I have them on all my trucks and change the tires myself, easy to do. The Lincoln/Merc engine is all right also. Budget for about $10,000 and you'l have a good truck! Newc
