Default Almquist 500 R camshaft

My last camshaft question: This is the last one I found it the rafters. An Almquist 500 R in good condition. All lobes look good not flattened out (see photos).

I googled (Almquist 500 R) no help. Before I go to the HAMB I'm wondering if any of the flathead Ford V-8 engine builders here know anything about it.

My guess would be it is a full race not a 3/4 race. Needs to be polished, and what is it worth?

Thanks, Mark

Mark,

Judging by the rust pits in the close up photo of the lobes, the cam is only good for wall art. The profile could be copied from one of the lobes that is not rusty (if there is a lobe that is not rusty) to make a new set of master lobes for a camshaft grinder and then the lobes could be reground, but that is cost prohibitive too due to the cost of making the master lobes. Otherwise it kind of looks like there might be enough of the lobes left for maybe another regrind to a fairly small profile. So, my opinion is that it is worth the cost of a core which ranges from $20-40.

You might want to degree it and compare it some of the more popular ones available to day.

Back in the middle 50's we had a hot rod club and a 39 coupe club car. I built a 296 and bought an Almquist cam. I cain't remember what the cam was but I know that was one screaming engine. Walt

I dunna know, I'd try it. After all, it's a flat head and guys use to regrind cams in the pits during a race.

Thanks to all for the information.

I just rememberd when I worked for Dunn Cams In Detroit in the 50's (I was the clean up kid) floors and dirty parts. Customers would bring in Stock Car/Modified Hard Top Cams to be repaired that were worked on in the pits to make the feature race.

They did teach me how to port and polish Flathead blocks and manifolds. :-)
