Default Stromberg 97 or holley 94

Pros and cons of both carbs , what carb is better for a 1949 to 53 flathead ,speedway sells the super 97 for $299.00 about the same cost for a holley 94 , what is the opinion on both.

First whatever carb you buy needs a venturi vacuum port to work with the original distributor...
I like the 94 since i can tune it for better economy then the Stromberg...downside is you need to understand how to tune the vacuum part if going for a non stock setup.
If its for a stock engine the 94 should work just fine !

the engine in my 53 f-100 is a stock 51 mercury flathead , It has a new 94 carb on it ,only mods on engine are tube headers and smithy glass packs.

If your friends are buying Speedway carbs, get new friends.

I have a very good friend that used a speedway super.

Granted I do use an new english97 and have had and run some other old 97s rebuilt by a local race guy. Both earlier flatheads then yours.

As mentioned, your carb choice is determined by your distributor choice. I like the 97s a lot. But not what you might need.

Nope. 36 was a 97. 38 was first yr chandler "94" (now a 97). Nothing wrong with the 94.

After the correct powervalves became unobtainable awhile ago, i decided to try a very nice Stromberg48 i had on my bench for years as garage art. The 40 ran so good, I never took it off. Been years running the 48 carb. Most trouble free carb I have ever ran.

Hi all; Just a note about the 94 style. Found another rebuilder mix/mash 94. It had the external float vent top on a 'rt' base. Those external vent tops are for crank mounted fan engines only I understand. ??? Went down the '40 concourse line at Salem Western Nats and saw a variety of carb tops. Newc

Why would anyone, for any reason, ever buy a carburetor or ask for advice from anyone but Max?

He is the final answer on these carbs.

Probably because there are actually other people out there that can do quality work also. I agree that Max does have the best reputation on 97's.
