Default 39 24stud timing gear

What is simplest way to check for a stripped timing gear? Pull a plug and look for up and down action of valves ? I hope mine is not stripped. It spins mighty fast but won't start.

You could run a compression test to see what is going on.

Look to see if the distributor is turning.
or pull a plug and see if the valves are working.

Lawson, You could take off one side distributor cap and turn the engine over with a crank or starter and see if the rotor is turning. Kerk

Had the same thing happened on my 35 fordor sedan in 2010. My engine rebuilder had used an off shore manufactured fibre timing gear. After ~ 1500 miles the timing gear had severely worn teeth, and maybe 5-6 that completely sheared. Replaced that gear with an aluminum gear and all has been well for last 30k miles.

Striping timing gears does not seem to be a common problem in early Fords, even press on ones moving.. Am I wrong? Glad I went for ali one though..
