This 1936 Ford Phaeton is one of only 5,555 built during the 1936 model year. The Phaeton was only available as a deluxe model and was priced at 590.00-making it one of the most expensive body styles to be offered in 1936. Today, very few original and correct phaetons have survived, making it one of the most desirable and sought after of all the early Ford V8s.
This example has been owned by only two families since it was first sold in 1936. It is an extremely solid and well cared for car that was properly restored many years ago, but today remains in excellent, overall condition. The body is very tight and clean. The doors fit the body well and open and close as they should. The fenders appear to be in very good condition. The hood aligns well with the cowl and front grill assembly. The car is finished in the proper combination of black with an apple green pin stripe and wheels. The is a correct color option used on the 1936 phaetons. Today, the older black repaint shows well with a good, even gloss but does have the expected signs of wear including the expecting chips, thinning, scratches and some light cracking in spots-only noticeable from a distance.
The car retains all of its proper and original 1936 trim items including the correct deluxe, chrome plated grill, headlamps, horn cover vents, front and rear bumpers, correct windshield assembly, top irons, etc. The chrome plating remains in good, overall condition and still shows very well.
The inside of this car was completely and properly restored with a Le Baron Bonney interior assembly. The seats, door panels, cowl panels, carpets etc are all correct Le Baron Bonney replacements that were professionally installed and today remain in very good to excellent condition. The convertible top assembly functions as it should and the correct, replacement, Le Baron Bonney tan top covering shows only the expected signs of wear but is in very good and usable condition. We do not have the side curtains, although, matching side curtains are available new from Le Baron Bonney. The dash assembly is correct and retains all of its proper gauges and controls. The fuel gauge will need looking at.
Mechanically, the car runs and drives well. The engine has been upgraded to a later and desirable 59AB unit which makes more power and is more reliable than the original 1936 engine. The engine retains a proper 1936 Stromberg 97 carburetor. Only a early Ford V8 expert would be able to tell that this is not the correct engine for 1936. The engine bay is very clean and has been recently detailed.
The car is fitted with some nice period accessories including dual front Ford script driving lights, bumper guards, wind wings, dual windshield wipers, white wall tires and a Southwind heater (the heater is currently disconnected).
Overall, this is an excellent example of one of the most desirable open Ford V8s built. It will be a welcomed addition to any collection. The car is being offered at the extremely reasonable price of 39,500.00 which is far less than it would cost to restore. Of course, this car is being sold with a clear and current title which retains the original 1936 Ford VIN number of 18-2961169.
