Default Malfunction

Two weeks ago took the 36 out for a 15 mile drive for a Car Show and Blessing of the Fleet in Darien, Ga. Got about half way and the engine just seemed to be running out of fuel. I use Marine gas only. Would not continue on its own power so called Triple A to the rescue. Got her back home, started her up a drove into the garage.

Today I started her up, ran her in the garage for about ten minutes, got up to temperature and shut her down. Half a tank of gas, new Drake fuel pump and a rebuilt 97. I’ve driven old flatheads for fifty plus years and haven’t had this happen.

Dirt in the fuel, vapor lock, flexible line looks good, perhaps a computer chip malfunction in the burbalator, I don’t know.

Opinions requested,

John

Maybe electrical, condenser will do that, quits when it gets hot, runs when it cools down.

Coil or condenser would be a place to look. Original coil or canister coil? A check of how hot the coil gets when the car stops running would give you an indication if it's the coil.

If you are running a Mallory electronic ignition it might be the module.
I had the case where it would heat up after about 20 min. of driving and then "conk out". Wait 10 min. and it would re-fire only to shut off again.

Check the fuel filter, if it has one.

The car is 100% original except for the diode in the generator cutout and a 6volt Optima battery. Stock ignition, Skip Haney product, about 1000 miles on the restoration, no fuel filter and a new Drake fuel pump.

Due to the lack of quality parts to keep our old ignition systems working reliably. Why not convert to electronic, I understand the GM module will work on 6 volts and replacing the points with a petronics unit is a piece of cake, I'm sure Charley NY or Bubba could supply you with what you need

Excessive opposition to current flow when the resistor heats up. Short out the resistor the next time this happens....

Also. if you have a flexible fuel line the inner lining can collapse under pressure, but idle fine. Had it happen to me. Be blessed & good luck. Ain't flatheads fun!!?? mike
