Default Sears Rebuilt Engines

The 1929 Sport Coupe I recently bought came with an engine that has apparently been rebuilt, but never installed in the car. The original S/N has been ground off the block and the block has been re-stamped with a 6-digit number (745238). I’ve been told this engine was probably a Sears-rebuilt unit.

Does anyone know how to confirm this or any history of Sears selling rebuilt Model A engines ?

Thanks - Jim

I bought a Sears rebuilt A short block in 1962 for $795. Ran it for a number of years with no problems.

I have a Sears rebuilt engine in our 1929 Sport Coupe. Was installed in the 60’s. We have owned car since 1981. Engine still runs great. Quite, lots of power, no smoke, little oil dripping, and good compression. Engine will out last me.

Enjoy.

This Sears engine tag came with a 30 roadster I bought 15 years ago. We were told by the seller that the engine in the roadster was the very same Sears engine as represented by the tag. Shows cylinder bore, rod and main undersize specs. The date over on the bottom right is: 3-59. Doesn't show in the photo. Engine still runs good.

That is cool. Nice the rebuilder did that takes the guess work out.

I wonder who Sears contracted to do these builds? Several regional rebuilders? One rebuilder for the entire nation?

May make a good article some day in MAN or The Restorer if it hasn't been done already.

The item: "Source" on the tag probably tells us that more than one machine shop or rebuilder was used by Sears.

Over the years I've seen various tags put on by "rebuilders" giving the mains, rods, and cylinders sizes.

I never heard of these engines until recently. I have one of their two row radiators.

My 29 Tudor came to me with a 2 row radiator, and it spit out a quart of coolant every 10 miles because it couldn't pass it to the bottom tank fast enough.

Is that number correct? Seems like a lot of money for then.

todd3131: You're right, I was working by memory. I looked up my files and it was $495.
