Unhappy 272 vs 292 in my 55 Fairlane?

I tried to change my oil filter on my 272, but found out it was too big
Im starting to think perhaps the engine was swapped out and mine is a 292. Where can I find the engine code on the casting?

The recess in the block for whatever oil filter setup is bolted on will be the same size.

Engine block casting number chart and example photos of their locations at this link...
http://ford-y-block.com/Block%20identification.htm

The original filter until '57 would have been the bolt-on canister style. Many of the earlier Y-block engines have been converted to the '57+ style spin-on filter. There are other possibilities as well.

Addressing "Where can I find the engine code on the casting?"
http://www.ford-y-block.com/Block%20identification.htm
and further on distinguishing a 312 from 292

My 1957 292 take a Motorcraft FL-1A filter.

What do you mean "too big" ? is the filter too long or too wide to fit in the canister ? Is it possible you have a later engine that uses a spin on rather than a canister ?

Does the new filter look like the old one ?

If the car has the pre-'57 cannister/element type; use a Purolator P-48 filter element or equivalent.
If you have the spin-on type, use Motorcraft FL-1A filter. This will fit all Y-block Ford engines as well as the 215/223 I-block 6-cyl engines with the adaptor fitting for spin-on filters. There are several other filter vendors that have equivalent offerings instead of the Motorcraft filter.
No problem removing or installing filters regardless whether the car has standard or power steering.

Not the oil filter... that's a road draft tube & filter. It vents fumes from the crankcase and collects oil vapors to drain back into the engine. It can be disassembled and cleaned as needed. Photos 1 & 2.

The actual oil filter is approx double that size and about 12 inches farther back on the same side of the engine. Photo 3, oil filter location, yellow arrow.
A road draft tube & filter like yours would be located at the red arrow... but they weren't used in '55/'57 T-birds, which is the photo I have.
