Testing Cutout
My ’28 roadster had a dead battery when I tried to start it. I replaced the battery with a fully charged, 6-volt one and found that I was getting a spark when I connected the battery cables. When I disconnected the wires from the cutout, there was no spark, so I clipped the cutoff wires together and everything worked, starter, all lights and horn. I assume that the cutout or generator are bad. What is the best way to check for this?
Thanks in advance, Robert |

Re: Testing Cutout
Connect the cutout back up, pop the belt off and connect the battery. If the generator is spinning the cutout is stuck. You’ll also see a big draw at the ammeter.

I bought both my ’28 roadster and early ’28 open cab pickup back in 1989. I had the powerhouse generator in the pickup repaired in 2004. As I was concerned about its old cutout I replaced it with a diode type. I found that old cutout in my junk collection and replaced the one on the roadster with it. Everything is working now. Thanks again, Robert |
