Default Testing Cutout

My ’28 roadster had a dead battery when I tried to start it. I replaced the battery with a fully charged, 6-volt one and found that I was getting a spark when I connected the battery cables. When I disconnected the wires from the cutout, there was no spark, so I clipped the cutoff wires together and everything worked, starter, all lights and horn. I assume that the cutout or generator are bad. What is the best way to check for this?

Thanks in advance, Robert

Connect the cutout back up, pop the belt off and connect the battery. If the generator is spinning the cutout is stuck. You’ll also see a big draw at the ammeter.

Thanks Ryan but I think I’ve lucked out.
I bought both my ’28 roadster and early ’28 open cab pickup back in 1989. I had the powerhouse generator in the pickup repaired in 2004. As I was concerned about its old cutout I replaced it with a diode type. I found that old cutout in my junk collection and replaced the one on the roadster with it. Everything is working now.
Thanks again, Robert
