59A flathead oil passageway plugs question
On a flathead (59A) there is a oil passage plug at each end of the block. One of them has a shoulder of sorts on it. What is the purpose of this? Does any one make this special plug with the shoulder NEW?

Re: 59A flathead oil passageway plugs question
Michael, your question about the front oil gally plug has been the same question I've had since I've owned and worked on these early Flathead engines....starting in the late 50's. Basically what I was told...the extended diameter on that threaded plug, was to restrict the flow of oil coming through that galley, and going into the timing gear area.

Re: 59A flathead oil passageway plugs question
John,
Thanks! I am prepping to build a engine for my 36 and have lost the plugs, I can obviously put basic pipe plugs in, but my concern was what happens if I put a plug in without the shoulder. It seems maybe no harm will come from it? |

I dunno Michael....the front oil pressure relief valve has a flat on it in order that a small amount of oil can 'bleed off' to lube the timing gears. I think that works in conjunction with the other restriction provided by that protrusion on the front gallery plug. Fitting a plug without that protrusion could allow more oil to escape through the flat in relief valve....meaning less oil to bottom end? Henry, renowned for being frugal, obviously decided that the extra material in that plug was warranted....

Re: 59A flathead oil passageway plugs question
Michael, some of the engine building guru's who post here also say that special threaded plug is not that important, but I've always made sure the correct plug went into any FH engine I have from 35 to 48 and also any engines I've built in those same years. My theory is the same as Brian's on this plug.... Henry would not have wasted even a fraction of a cent on a part like this unless it served some purpose, and it may even serve more than one purpose. I'd suggest putting the correct plug in those engines you are building. I have a few extra if you need one, or two.

He most likely sells used and/or NOS, I doubt any one is reproducing that plug design. However, I could make one pdq if necessary

Quote:
back side and pressed a brass pin in with lock tight. Pictures and some scaling down or up on the PC this pin cannot come out cause its under pressure. The rear plug hardware bought brass plugs, has to be machined thinner and screw driver slotted which is a pain. The solution; screw the new fat plug into a known female with the same TPI with locktight, chuck it up and face of both of them cause this plug is thin or the rear idler gear cover will not sit flat with a store bought plug. My problem 2hrs to find a female fitting and 10 seconds to face it LOL in the shop. Or those without access to a lathe, clamp it in a vise and grind it to make it thinner............ |
