Default 39 Ford Mercury hubcaps in pictures

There is a recent thread on 39 Mercs. In it was a few mentions of the Ford Mercury hubcap. When the 39 Merc. was first introduced it was still undecided as to how it should be marketed. At the beginning the thought was to position the new car as an up-scale Ford model. Thus the Ford Mercury designation as presented in the earliest hubcap design. Shortly after the cars went on sale the final decision was made to have the Mercury stand as a separate line. This made the Ford Mercury hubcaps a rare item. Like the Ford, there was an accessory hubcap offered from the dealer that was a one piece stainless unit that covered the spokes of the wide five wheels. The pictures show all 4 types of 39 Merc. caps, a comparison of the 39 accessory caps to the similar 38 Lincoln Zephyr cap, and a 38-9 Ford spider cap.

Never knew that about the Mercury line, I’ll bet those Ford-Mercury caps are pretty rare.

Cool Cat with Hot Car, that is a very impressive collection of early and late Mercury standard and accessory Hubcaps. Those Ford Mercury caps are especially rare.

This is the only time I have ever seen a 1939 Mercury with the early production Ford Mercury Hubcaps.

Mercury's version of the Spyder Hubcap lacked the dimples around the edge, but never the less they were a very impressing hubcap. As you can see from the above picture, they are larger than the regular Mercury Hubcap and hid the dimples on the wheel that were visible on the regular hubcap. I don't see many pictures of 1939 Mercurys in the USA with these Accessory hubcaps? The above photos is of an Australian 1939 Mercury.
Question - Are these Accessory 1939 Mercury Hubcaps rare in the USA?

Comparison - 1939 Mercury Hubcaps - Regular and Accessory. You can see that the Accessory hubcap is much larger externally than the regular Mercury hubcap. However, on the inside, the attachments for holding the hubcaps on are both the same. These Accessory 39 Mercury Hubcaps are very nice hubcaps, and do add to the overall looks of the 1939 Mercurys.

A friend of mine sent me this picture of his four Accessory 1939 Ford Mercury Hubcaps, plus the centre piece from the regular Ford Mercury hubcap. How rare is it to have four of these rare Accessory 1939 Ford Mercury Hubcaps in your collection?

Rockfla

I've had the full stainless cap for about a year. I was at a small local type swap meet in Lodi, Ca. There was a guy with a pile of scruffy hubcaps. I saw the ribs sticking up out of a box and almost fell over when I pulled the cap out. He knew what he had when I asked the price. He said he had to get $10.00 for the cap. I got him down to $8.00 and made the deal. Now all I need is 3 more for my Merc.!

Mercman

To have four of the accessory Ford Mercury caps has to be extremely rare. Until this thread the only one I have seen is the one I have.

We have the full set of the one style (see mercman's 2nd post, top picture above) that is of our car, a very early 39 Merc Town Sedan. The reason for asking IS....one of the "full" SS caps magically appeared on Ebay about a week and a half ago, I bid the cap to the end (the only bidder) till 4 seconds to go and got sniped!!.....I wonder IF it was you that got it. Obviously not. Great find by the way

The problem with "rare" and these hub caps in particular IS 1) the amount of 39 Merc's left in existence that would actually qualify for their use is VERY slim..... first 3 weeks production (that is it). 2) The interest in them (like the original cars themselves) is fading fast......Thus a small few like US who appreciate the "rarity" (or unusual-ness) of them!!!

AND

IF any follower of this post has one of the "more standard" Ford/Mercury caps they would like to sell, it would be "nice" to have one more for our Merc on the spare tire. Not a necessity BUT would be nice!!!!

Here is a set of 39 logo caps on my A. Logo is the same as 39 wide 5 cap, but they are for normal 16'' wheels???? They are not stainless, they are steel.

Bob, That is one unique Mercury Hubcap. Is it a made-up one using the skin of the 1939 Regular Mercury Hubcap?

Here is a picture of a 1941 Mercury Hubcap. Notice that it is different to the ones used on Bob's Model A Coupe.

Mercman,
They don't seem to be made from another cap, they look factory made.
