Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
I think this is the info that copperpenny is pointing us towards.
(Public service announcement: Win7/Vista have a useful utility called SNIPPING TOOL. Anything you can see on the screen you can select a portion and save it to a .jpg. A slick way to start it is to tap the Windows Logo key on the keyboard, and type SN, the first search hit should be SNIPPING TOOL, and then press enter. Sometimes I use CTRL+ to zoom the screen before taking the snapshot.) -VT/Jeff Last edited by VeryTangled; 02-03-2013 at 11:38 AM. |

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
The fun just never ends... Yesterday, while out driving the Zephyr, another motorist mentioned to me (at a stop light) that the car had no brake lights... I turned around and went home (using the headlight switch to activate rear illumination to emulate brake lights). I've got the '51 F-1 perched on the lift with a bottle jack supporting the bell housing so; I can't move the truck, which left me no choice but to crawl under the Zephyr. I checked for power to the brake light switch... that was ok... I checked for power out of the switch... that was ok as well... through my severely limited power of reasoning I deduced that the problem was isolated somewhere in the original 74 year old wiring harness. I checked the connections to the tail lights (they work) so the interruption has to be in the wiring for the brake lights... Upon closer inspection I found several sections of wire that were lacking insulation… I have a new Rhode Island Wiring harness for the car but I didn’t want to install it until after all the body work and painting were done so, I think I’ll fabricate a separate “harness” to run from the brake light switch to the tail lights and see if that cures the problem…
Anyone have a better idea as to how I can remedy this situation?

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Vic, I think fabricating a seperate harness is the solution until you are ready to install the replacement harness. Steve

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
I think that's gonna' be the way to go... I won't have a chance to get to it durring the week and I'll be out of town on Wednesday so, it's lookin' like Saturday's play time will be divided between the '51 F-1 transmission swap and the Zephyr wiring and possibly some work on Mike's '41 Business Coupe. If you're not doing anything fun... come on up...

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
I don't think there's enough "black tape" in the state of Florida to cover the "icky parts"... that's a looong harness...

Sounds like the Zephyr is on it's last legs. You should sell it to me....

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Bud, As with most of our "old cars" (not just the Flatheads), there are times that I'd consider giving them away however, that feeling always passes rather quickly... As for the Zephyr, you'll have to wait until I join Henry Ford, to have a chance at her...

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Vic, are you running flashing indicators? If so the feed goes from the brake light switch into the indicator switch and then back out to the brake lights.
Just checking. Mart. |

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Mart, no, the car is stock as far as electrical accessories go... (no turn signals) I just use my left arm (and middle finger when appropriate...) to signal my intentions to drivers behind me...

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
This schematic is similar to my pickup installation. The switch I found at a swap meet had an additional power feed for the fronts. It allowed the use of the parking lights for directionals. There is no identification on the switch I have. It looks very similar to the one in the diagram which is a Signal-Stat 900.

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
For turn signal information, take a look at my club's website TechTopics. There are two articles there, one a collection of signal wiring stuff and a second on my installation on a '29 Tudor. http://www.CedarCreekAs.org

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Chuck & Bill, thanks for the turn signal information. I have installed turn signals in other cars but, for now, I kind a like just using my arm, hand, and finger as that method gives me a chance to express my true feelings toward other drivers... LOL

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
With the weekend fast approaching, we've got a full plate of fun scheduled. Steve, John, Chuck, Cliff, Mike and Don are all planning to be at the garage. The itinerary includes installing the '49 Merc O/D transmission in the '51 F-1 (just so we can temporally move the truck off the lift) and put the Zephyr up so we can fabricate and install a wiring harness for the brake lights. We'll also check out Steve's '46 Coupe to see if we can locate the source of the "chatter" and possibly get Mike's '41 up on the lift to check the rear end... All that work (fun) will definitely call for a PIZZA...
On another subject, have any of you ever used car detailing products from Griot's Car Care? I sometimes get their catalog in the mail but, until this week, I've never bought any of their products as (in my opinion) they are rather pricy... I was at the local car parts store and they were having a SALE on Griot's products. I bought a 35 ounce spray bottle of "Speed Shine, the five minute detail" and a package of micro fiber cloths. I used it on our '39 CS and really liked the result (not sure the photo is a good representation of the shine) so, I tried some on the '39 LZ (the paint job on the LZ is over 50 years old and to say its not in the best condition is an understatement of gargantuan proportions). Well, now I'm sold on this product. Guess I'll have to watch for the next sale!

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
John, We won't be able to configure and/or fabricate the "rear" mount/cross member until get the transmission in and see where everything sits. We’ll also have to see if the solenoid will clear the existing cross member or if we’ll have to “trim” a little off to make room…

Vic:
Which of Griot's products did you use? I went to there site and they offer a large selection of Cleaners / paint Prep. / wheel cleaners. How was the ease of application / removal ? |

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Vic - car looks really good as I've seen this one up close and personal. I've used a couple of "quick shine" products over the years - I call them a "24 hour" shine in that they usually do a great job say for a show or cruise night but are not a long lasting one.
Last couple years I've been using a Gliptone product on my 40 coupe - it can be applied in direct sunlight, hot cars, cold cars, and using microfibre towels the shine is contagious to say the least. It looks like Pepto Bismal as it's pink in color but it sure does shine up my 35+ year old paint job on my coupe! |
