Default rear quarter panel

I am installing new rear quarter panels on my 39 standard coupe. They were purchased from EMS. They don't fit too bad but there seems to be a gap of about 1-1/2 in. from the bottom of the panel to the top of the running board, right in the corner, where the leading edge of the fender, the running board and the quarter panel meet. Make sense? The panel (to the running board) fits snug starting from the door pillar leading toward the rear fender then rises up to meet the fender. Is that normal? Was there a gap all the way from the door pillar to the fender? How much? I did see a 40 coupe the at had a gap at the rear but am not sure if the car had original or replacement panels on it. Thanks for the input.............

Thirty-three years ago I repaired the rusted out rear quarters of my 40 Ford coupe using fiberglass cloth/resin as I didn't have a welder. Here's how it came out. The distance of the inside calipers is 11/16 on both sides at the intersection of the 3 pieces you mentioned. I imagine if you use metal panels it would be about the same but would would look "cleaner."
I don't recall the 1 1/2 in space you mentioned. Hang the fender and the running board to see how it looks then.
