Touring Class Judging Question regarding A/Conditioning
I just finished a phone conversation regarding someone entering a Model-A in Touring Class judging where the vehicle is equipped with Air Conditioning. I have scanned thru my MARC T/C Judging book and I don't see anything that specifically excludes this, -nor where it would be deducted for. I don't have a MAFCA T/C Book, so does anyone have any first-hand knowledge on how added A/C systems are handled with vehicles entered in Touring Class judging??

Re: Touring Class Judging Question regarding A/Conditioning
I have one of those small portable air conditioners, where you run the hot exhaust hose out the window, but the whole unit sets inside the room. I've wondered if a small Honda generator would run this, and how well it would fit in the back seat area?

I was getting a web site that showed car fixes, there were quite a number of cars so equipped, including in the window units. LOL

Re: Touring Class Judging Question regarding A/Conditioning
Without knowing what the J.S. has to say, in my opinion, I think that a modern air conditioning unit would be stretching the limits of acceptability, even in the Touring Class, much like installing a Pinto engine. I certainly understand the soundness of the reasoning in wanting air conditioning, but it is just that it does not properly fit the general understanding of what a Ford Model A is.
Also it does not properly fit the era essence of the car. Now my car does have air-conditioning, so I fully understand the benefits of air-conditioning. However, my 1928 Phaeton came with it from the Ford factory. And too, my late '31 Dlx Coupe came with factory air-conditioning. If the owner/driver uses all of the car's air-conditioning appointments, one can get by quite nicely - windshield opened 1", windows rolled down to fit your comfort zone, and in the case of my '31 Dlx Coupe, the rear window also rolled down. I realize that some people want MORE ! I fully appreciate that. And that is why I am pleased to announce that the Ford Motor Company (and others) have offered today's driving public, with a newer car that has today's modern air-conditioners fully installed at the factory. |

Re: Touring Class Judging Question regarding A/Conditioning
BRENT in 10-uh-C original question was about air conditioning being judged in MARC's Touring Class.
Jim Cannon’s answer was made in reference to the MARC T/C judging. As the Chairman of MAFCA’s Restorers Class Committee, let me add some clarification relative to The Restorers Class. MAFCA’s Restorers Class allows air conditioners; they are accepted but not evaluated. The two links below provide the information for The Restorers Class, Policies & Procedures, Entry Criteria, Permissible Items, and the evaluation sheet. Policies & Procedures: 1. Vehicles are evaluated and awarded points based upon condition, finish and originality. 2. “Award Point System” - each Model A starts at zero points and has the potential to earn up to a maximum of 450 points. 3. Good era and reproduction parts are accepted; as identified they will receive one less point. 4. Evaluators do not test any equipment as to its proper operation. 5. Visual evaluation only carried out, no tools or measuring devices utilized. 6. Vehicle evaluation encompasses Engine, Body, Exterior Plating, Interior, Wheels/Tires and Undercarriage areas. Entry Criteria: 1. Vehicle owner shall be a current MAFCA member and is required to supply their membership number to enter a vehicle. 2. Model A as defined by Ford Production (Benchmark) - No Modifieds or Speedsters 3. Engine Block – Model A or B. 4. Original or good reproduction parts as defined by Ford production for the year and model. 5. Paint – Model A era correct color for the year & model. Slight variations or interpretations are acceptable. 6. Vehicle must be licensed and road-worthy. 7. No fiberglass fenders or body parts. Permissible Items: (No points awarded for these items) 1. Alternator 2. Radial Tires 3. Hydraulic Brakes Accepted Items, not evaluated. 1. Turn Signals 2. Seat Belts 3. Additional Rear-View Mirror 4. Right Hand Tail Lamp and bracket. 5. Overdrive 6. 12 Volt System 7. Era Air Cleaner 8. Air Conditioner 9. Trailer Hitch 10. Accessories 11. Radios The link below is the information for The Restorers Class http://mafca.com/rc_about.html The link below is the evaluation sheet used in MAFCA Restorers Class evaluations. http://mafca.com/rc/eval_score_sheet.pdf

Re: Touring Class Judging Question regarding A/Conditioning
Well, the answers to this question sure has been enlightening.
I look forward hearing from the MARC touring class committee on the subject.
