The VIN number should be on the top of the bell portion just above the inspection port. Mac VanPelt's site has the numbers. It would be worth that if you get at least some good parts with it. If it is missing the top shifter housing & parts, has rusty gears, or has a crack or worn down thrust face in th case then that limits the value a good bit.

Forget the serial number on the case as it is the gears and shifter that are important. The gears will fit in the older cases as well as the "correct" case might have the wrong gears.

check the code on the back of the case too 78 - 7008 from memory. what's it worth pfft! well mine was running and driving however now that I have disassembled it there is just about nothing salvageable, Ive had Mac just do a complete internal for me plus all other associated parts, I could not even save my case as the thrust faces where shot..
SO take a REAL GOOD look.

A good complete shifter top with correct 39 forks and swan neck shift lever would alone be worth $175.00 or more. If the case is correct and in good rebuildable condition that would be another big plus. Good gears are important as well, but donor gears are fairly easy to find in '40-'48 side loader transmissions.

Not all 78 cases with double dent shift towers had the desirable syncro assembly (the original one in my '39 pickup was a 78 case with the double dent tower but it was the earlier style. You need the ones with the big forks. Van Pelt's site explains it all.
