leaky rear brake cylinder fitting
I thought I read a thread on this but cannot find the info using the search function. I replaced both rear brake cylinders, one is fine the other I cannot get the line to seal at the cylinder, it is as tight as it can be, I hit the pedal and fluid squirts out around the fitting.
This is a new cylinder....made in China......I thought I read where this is quite common.....leaky junk, or was I dreaming it? I bought the cylindes thru O'Rileys...I am ready to order a new one from Speedway...anyone useed the Speedway ones? Thanks for the input..................Dale |

Re: leaky rear brake cylinder fitting
Sometimes the flare doesn't seat right the first time, did you loosen it and reposition the line and then tighten it up again? I've had that happen a few times.

Re: leaky rear brake cylinder fitting
The first check is the wheel cylinder to make sure it is a rear not a front. Rears have a taper seat base to accept the tubing line flare. If it does not have a provision for a flare its a front. If it has the provision for the flare the next step is to check the steel line flare to insure that it has seated correctly, if it is factory made the seat should have a uniform taper. If you custom made the steel line flare with a flaring tool it is important that the flare be even and not be compressed with a slight offset as many hand flare tools loosen and exhibit this forming tendency. The third place to look is the correct length threaded nipple. The rear line nipple should be longer so the thread body inserts further into the cylinder. If your nipple is the short thread style it may not insert far enough into the cylinder to seat the line.

Also check the flare to make sure it has not split.

Re: leaky rear brake cylinder fitting
Agreed with all above. Close visual inspection of parts is needed.
Previous wheel cylinder posts have covered front cylinders not sealing properly (stripped threads?), and rear cylinders leaking internally due to holes drilled in the wrong place. Mart. |
