Rather expensive but this would do the job. Many people make their own similar device.

If replacing it , Just run a weld around the inside & that shrinks it , will fall out,

You can either pound out carefully while it is well supported or for the novice you could heat the area up and it should pretty much fall out.

Steven
I use kr Wilson puller meant for the task Aata-1 . Works awesome but I realize they are far and few between.
I would suggest if there is someone in a nearby Model A club who might have something. You can also call Mitchell who does the overdrives and see what their cost is for theirs.
Where are you located. Pot that so possibly someone nearby who might have for in access can help.

I have tool I made from an old, failed pinion gear that was on the end of a drive shaft. I cut the shaft down to about ten inches long. The pinion gear has the old bearing on it. In order to pull the race out of an otherwise empty banjo I insert the tool and attach my pinion puller to it and the pinion bearing will pull the race out.

I bought one of these and have used it several times - it works quite well for axle housing and pinion races.

Hello, also note IF any shims are between race and pinion housing, some were shimmed to get correct gear tooth setting.

With all due respect this is NOT true . Trying to make sure original poster has good information if a rebuild is necessary. Like Tom Endy, Ive done hundreds of rear axles and have never had a pinion race shimmed. I don’t believe there is any original ford shim part number either. Gear depth pinion to ring gear is accomplished with gasket thickness left to right housing after total carrier preload is determined. I think Toms is probably the best on line article out there and there are others in printed form.
They are not enormously difficult to do but there is a process that if done right will give you an reliable axle for many miles to come.

Getting back to the original posters issue, please update us when you know what the culprit was.
Happy Model A motoring.

there are two types of car pinions one early style does not have a pinion carrier.
later has the pinion carrier.

the early style needs to be removed from the housing before it can come off of the driveshaft. the drive shaft/pinion assy will not come out of the banjo as an assy.

The pinion race tools are nice if one is rebuilding many differentials. However, if just one or two, welding the ID of the race / heating the exterior of the housing works fine.

When I installed my Mitchell OD, I used my club’s pinion puller.
