I have a '31 Deluxe Roadster that is leaking at the pipe coming from the tank to the shutoff valve and just inside the firewall. The outside leak is much worse than the inside leak. Can that pipe be easily removed and teflon tape applied to stop this leak?

It’s pretty easy if there’s no gas in the tank. Messy if there is. Sounds like there is if it’s leaking so what I would do is get clear tubing big enough to go over the fuel pipe. Unscrew it fast and slip the tubing over the pipe and have it drain into a gas can. Then you could take your time and use the yellow Teflon tape to wrap the threads. I’d suggest doing all the threaded fittings on the fuel line.

I can do that, but the leak is at the firewall around the threaded pipe that extends out to the cutoff valve. I don't know how to get that our to put tape on it.

The leak is from the firewall end of that pipe connection. It just started a few days ago.

It might be easier and less messy if you undo the line at the carburetor. Get the gas out of the tank and then you can work on the fix.

Undo line at carb and attach clear tubing to gas line and run gas into can on ground,emptying tank first. Then do repair.

It appears that the gas valve needs the yellow teflon tape. Drain the gas as others have said and unscrew the gas valve. I use a product called Gasoila. It is a paste that is used in the oil fields. It seals gas leaks very well. Maybe you can find it online. It should be easy to fix your leak.

I appreciate all of this, but the leak is not from the shutoff valve or the gas lines going to the carburetor. It appears that I have inherited a unique setup whereby a threaded pipe extends from the firewall about 1" and then into the valve. I have double checked and the leak is from the firewall side. I am not sure how to remove the threaded pipe from the firewall to apply any teflon tape. If you look at my posted picture carefully, you will be able to see the pipe in question. The valve has a female tread and the pipe is the male threaded portion. The leak is not at the valve.

On an original valve, that pipe you are talking about is part of the valve. The valve has a male threaded portion. If yours is not that type, i suggest you buy the original type and replace it. I have never seen a valve like that with a female thread and have a connecting nipple.

So you are saying there is a nipple between the pipe coming out of the tank
and the valve??

If you want to resolve the leak, use a product called "Gasoila E-seal. Take all connections apart, clean, and reassemble with the E-seal at every joint. It is a pipe joint compound impervious to gasoline and alcohol. I got mine on Amazon. Get the smallest amount available. A little goes a long way. Great stuff. Wait 24 hours after assembly to refill the tank.

Teflon tape covers one solution here! Gasoline leaks inside or outside the car, on a Model A Ford, really need to be investigated to make sure the teflon tape method is the solution. Make sure to make a safe fix on this! Just sayin!
