Default 1936 Ford Roadster - Grant Fleming, Canada

My friend in Canada, Grant Fleming owns this neat 1936 Ford Roadster. The crop behind his rural home was harvested last week. This photo was taken Saturday morning August 1st after the big round bales of straw had been rolled up.

I've always wanted a '36 Roadster or conv cpe, had a chance to trade my '36 coupe for a Roadster in 1953. It was November in Idaho, winter was on the horizon and my coupe had warm air (39 heater) and sweet music, passed on the deal.
Had a chance in 1956 to get a 36 conv coupe, that was going to the wrecking yard, engine was out of the car, could have had the '36 conv for $150. I had just received my draft notice so I passed on the that deal.
In 1963 I had a chance to buy a beautiful '36 Roadster, black with wine colored interior, car was near perfect, dead stock, owner needed money, $950. would have bought the car, My wife was against the deal, no room for our five kids, and I was not to keen on selling my '36 coupe.
My last chance to get an afordibily priced roadster came in '65/66. I came upon a '35 roadster, a complete running car that had been altered into an orchard truck with a pickup box in the trunk. All of the paint was scrubbed off of the fenders from tree contact. I offered the owner $125. for the car, he wanted $150. The owner would not come down, I would not come up, I walked... Have regretted walking away from the '35 every since.

blucar, Yes, but it was the right, rational decision at the the time. Plus, you got to keep your coupe. Lots of stories like that, to be sure. When I was young and still at home, I owned a 40 convertible, a 40 Standard coupe and the car in my avatar. Father said, "You're not turning my yard into a junk yard, even if they all run. That ended that! Still have the DeLuxe.

Yes, I know that ultimately I made the right choices when I opted to keep my coupe in lieu of an open car.
When I got drafted into the U.S. Army in 1956 I told my wife that I wanted to put the '36 in storage for the duration, thinking that I would need a work car when I got out and money would be tight after two years on army pay. My wife agreed with my thinking so the Ford survived the two year slumber in storage in Hollywood, CA, returning to the light of day in October 1958.

This is one well travelled early Ford V8. Grant Fleming's 1936 Ford Deluxe Roadster on display in the Early Ford V8 Grand Nationals Concourse at Lake Tahoe back in 2013. It is a long way from home. He is not shy in adding the miles to this gem.

I notice the headlights appear to be sealed beam, rather than the "bug eye" standard. Has he converted it to 12 volt or are the sealed beam 6 volt? Just curious. Almost as pretty as my blue 5 window!!! Rod

Hello to Ron Pilger in Alberta and everybody else on Ford Barn. I'm trying to learn to use this site, but it's not 100% easy and I can't attach images.

Thank you to Trevor for posting photographs. Do you want to see a couple more photos?

Yes, the car acquired sealed beam headlights at some point, possibly in or shortly after 1950 when it was purchased by a fellow named Horton in British Columbia who modified the car somewhat. The headlamps are 6 volt, mounted in BLC 682-J housings.

We put on a set of original FoMoCo stainless spyder hubcaps in 2013 shortly after buying this '36. It was driven to Ontario, Canada from northern Alberta via Montana, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Oklahoma using Route 66 wherever we could find it ......... then north through Missouri and Kentucky and Ohio and Michigan before crossing the international border. That trip focused on the Early Ford V8 Club Of America's 50th anniversary Grand National Meet at Lake Tahoe.

Mapquest calls it 5272 miles, but en route we drove around the Tahoe area and also Albuquerque as well as Mesa Verde in Colorado, so it was probably two or three hundred miles more than that. And also went for an ~85 mph full throttle run on the salt at Bonneville.

As you can see the vehicle has a pretty much stock appearance. Specs are:

221 cubic inch 1936 LB engine

Columbia two speed rear end (75 mph, no problem, great freeway cruiser)

1939 transmission

1939 pedals and hydraulic brakes

1939 banjo steering wheel

Firestone 6.00/16 belted tires

Awesome story about the Mr. Flemming's roadster.

I'm with you, Sid. A '35 Roadster will be the next car I purchase. I watch for them all the time and I'm ready to pull the trigger when the right one comes up.

Hi Everyone, I've had fun hanging with Grant at a couple of meets. Here's a picture from one memorable tour on Route 66 in Springfield IL when Grant was driving Ken36's lent roadster.

As for his roadster, here's another shot. I think I snapped it in front of the host hotel in Dearborn.

Grant's car also has some pretty cool add-on's.

Nice to hear from all of you fellows.

I sure would like to have an opportunity to cruise across America again to attend that Western National Meet at Lake Tahoe in 2021.

Let's hope next year will be safer for traveling ...... so far the international border remains closed. Very frustrating.

Difficult choice, but the backseat in this model offers significant advantages. Wet and cold weather can be a challenge, but that's why you bring someone to snuggle with!

Some of us love our cars, like Grant does.

This owner didn't really love his car. I think he hated it and was way beyond ready to get an award to advertise his car's quality and get it sent down the road at maximum value.

He was grumpy about the way the judges evaluated his restoration efforts but please cut the judges some slack. If you have paint patches, dude, they must actually blend with the rest of the vehicle so you can't tell it's two colors.

Jeff said "Difficult choice, but the backseat in this model offers significant advantages. Wet and cold weather can be a challenge, but that's why you bring someone to snuggle with!" but there is so much room in the rear of these Phaetons, that you could just about add an extra seat?

Yes, The square holes accept side curtain rods and the upper larger snaps are where they attach to. The lower snaps appear to be for a tonneau cover

Jeff mentioned that the red 1936 roadster has "add-ons". These three photos show the cast aluminum XF-9 Jetstensions on its dual exhaust tailpipes, as advertised on page 72 of Motor Trend's July 1953 issue.

Has anyone else run across old XF-9s like this? Somebody at one of the Early Ford V8 Club national meets said they were being reproduced but I've never seen another pair.

Trevor has been kind enough to post four more images as well as the above question. I still haven't figured out why we have "upload failure" occurring from my Think Center computer.

Thanks very much, Trevor.

Has anyone out there run across these cast aluminum XF-9 Jetstensions? Were they a popular accessory in the early 1950 's?

Ours came from Charlie Wells in Los Olivos CA.
