Default 28-48 universal joint wear

Should there be any side to side movement in the cups other then rotation?
How much is acceptable?
Not the in and out movement just the side to side wear areas.

The U joint takes a lot of grease, over a tube. I use a low
drip point chassis lube. If the U joint is low on grease it
will make noise and quiet down when more grease is
applied. G.M.

If the torque tube drive line is in stock position, I don't think there really is any wear, in lateral lateral motion do to the bolts holding the clam shell together. However, if you "rake" your car the torque tube shifts its position in relation to the outer clam shell surrounding it, whereby metal to metal contact will occur depending on the severity of the "rake".

If I understand your description the answer is yes, there should be side movement. The stock joint is a self-centering design which is why the Lincoln joints never withstand the abuse as well as the stock Ford joint.

I've had NOS joints and they have play side to side where the joint can slide in the bushings. Once installed they won't be able to move that way. I'd look for play in the joint caused by bushing wear, I've seen them where you can almost slide a feeler gauge in they are so worn.

The U- joint has other issues. The end washer 7095 looked homemade, bolt hole was not centered in the washer and was installed backwards. This poor installation resulted in the bolt loosening up and the u-joint mashing against the rear transmission bearing shield. Between oil on the clutch and this, no wonder I was having clutch chattering, especially in reverse.
I found an original rebuilt replacement u-joint I will be installing.
I also ordered the current 7095 replacement washer. It is not as heavy duty as the original convex one. Does any one have any issues with it? To me it's too thin and will flex if over tightened.
