Default Electrical Problem Light Switch

Yesterday I started my 1930 Fordor and turned the light switch on. When I did this the engine stopped. I got out and checked the lights and they were not on. I moved the switch lever to all positions and still no lights would come on. I turned light switch off and attempted to start and it just turned over and would not start. Next I looked at the switch on the end of the steering column and moved it slightly back and forth. The lights came on and I cranked it over and it started right up. I will look up in Andrews Book, but would appreciate some advise.

The only thing in the lighting switch that would prevent ignition is a dead short to ground, a dangerous situation. Disconnect the battery and check out the contact area ASAP.
