Just my thoughts but you do what ever you like - it's your money, your life.
Mostly just concerned with having enough hp to Drive safe since we have rlly steep hils in my area and loads of traffic

Without a part time job your dream of owning a car of any kind is unrealistic. Birthday money one day a year does not create enough wealth to purchase or maintain a vehicle let alone gasoline and insurance. Sorry it had to be me to be the one to burst the bubble

High 60s is not bad but it's nothing to write home about either. There is an old saying:
Good better best
Never let it rest
till your good is better and your better, best.
IMO, you have the right attitude and you will never regret putting in he effort now. It will make the ret of your life sooo much better (and easier). I wish I had given me that advice!

I agree you should focus on your education but if nothing else you have 3 months of summer holidays. A summer job would likely result in a few thousand dollars.

Not many of us have faced disapproval for bringing home rusty junk.

Are you interested in owning a car or are you interested in mechanical stuff and learning more about how things work? In the first case, save up your money and buy a car where most of the work has been done. In the second case, buy a car that needs lots of work and tear it apart and rebuild it.

In my case, I was always interested in the mechanical aspects and when 14 bought an old, inexpensive, car to rebuild.

Ok, picture is a bit clearer now, sorry I have not followed all of your posts. How about this, you want a car (preferably an A) and your parents want good grades. strike a deal that gets you the car you want but that you can't drive it until your grades get into the 'B' range-and stay there. Plus you may have to work on it so that keeps you more into the grades until your junior/senior year of H.S. But, at least you can work on it the rest of the time and get it fixed up to be reliable for years to come.

This way you get the mechanical experience, good grades and over the summer you get a job to earn the money to buy parts. Which leads you down the road of being financially responsible. It is a win, win, win, win situation.

Just my 2 cent worth.

When I was your age I nearly bought a Model A Tudor. I had a part time job and was able to come up with the $600 asking price. The car was original but needed brakes, a complete rebuild of the steering and front axle, some window glass, transmission rebuild, engine work, etc. etc. I also had plans for college with no financial support from my family. It was a hard decision because I had long wanted a Model A but I passed on it and continued on to college with my beater '49 Chev. Had I bought the Model A, my direction would have led me down a path of spending money on the car and with no other resources of time or finance to continue my education.

I am forever happy that I waited until I had a degree, a good job, and the resources to pursue the Model A hobby. Aside from my bride, it was the best decision I ever made.

One of the hard things about being a teenager is having lots of ideas and desire, but little money to carry it out. And you are at a low point in your earning ability as well. Focus on school, that's #1. Find part time work an get a cheap car to work on. Plenty of those around. My second car once I decided to start banking some money, was a $150 Ford Pinto that needed a water pump., the hood paint was ruined, and had the rear quarter window broken. Drove it about 3 years, learned to do brakes, points, belts and lots of other work on that car. It was a good way of sifting through the gold diggers vs the women with vision as well.

I did the same wanted a model a in the worst way but had to settle for a 67 mustang fastback (400 dollars and was a driver) I did all the paint motor and interior work in high school with the help of my dad. I was 28 before I got my model a. Things have changed now I can afford the a but not the mustang!

My neighbor and I are the same age and were both old Ford crazies. When we were 16, we found a '40 Ford Coupe with no engine or tranny and it seemed to be pretty solid. To us anyway. The floorpans were rotted away and the glass and interior were toast, the chrome work was all blistering, a large tree branch had fallen on it at one time and crunched the roof in,,,, you get the picture.

When my friend brought it home on a trailer Pop walked over to see it and said 'What are you two going to do with THIS?' and we said 'Restore it.'

He broke out laughing, shook his head, and walked back into the house.

We looked at each other, and thought 'Maybe he's right' and sold it the next week for a small profit!
