Default '39 transmission in a stock '36, is it compatible?

I have a stock '36 engine that has a stock '36 transmission. Can I switch out the '36 transmission with a stock '39 transmission? The old 36 trans- mission has metal flakes, making growling sounds. Will this switch work?

The transmission swap is pretty much a direct bolt in. The differences are mostly internal. The only thing that may need to swap out from your 36 transmission is the outer clutch lever and the rear mounting assembly based on condition. You can also get those items new if need be.

It's the best swap you can do!

Swap over the clutch release arm (7511 in the drawings) from your 36 trans to the 39. Swap over the complete rear mount/rear bearing retainer assembly from the 36 to the 39. Your 36 shifter lever will work perfectly with the 39 tower.

The big question......is that 39 trans in great working condition? It's a lot of work to get these transmissions out if you went through all the work and had to pull it back out to repair any issues with it.

What MacVP said.....

Another thing I've done on an original 36 car was to swap the '39-'48 gears into the '36 case, and use the '39 wide fork shift top with the '36 lever. This was done to keep the original serial numbered case that matched the serial number on frame.

I swapped the gears from a 46 48 into my 39 case. They are supposed to have better synchros. Not sure if they would fit in the 36 case. Van Pelt would know for sure.

Opps! I just found where it's even cheaper on Amazon Prime.

That Sta-Lube is straight 140.
