Ok you asked for it. Finding TDC by solid stop and cable tie method. Plus extras! VID
It took a while, it's amazing how much time it takes to edit these things. Here's everything I know about verifying Ford Flathead TDC and which cylinder should be firing. I also show how a pointer made from 1/8" welding wire can be quite effective. I hope it will be the go to resource for any questions involving flatty timing marks.
Solid stop while heads are off would be my preference, but if you have an already built motor, cable tie works pretty good. I think if more care was taken over making the marks, the results would be very good. Please have a look, I hope you all agree with how I did it, there's always some room for personal preferences, but please click like, and leave a comment. https://youtu.be/dn446jjCVRg Mart. |

Thanks for a great demonstration on 2 methods to find TDC .I am the one who did not know how . I am working on an engine that has been rebuilt recently , and has developed a bad miss . After checking all other possibility’s . The engine builder told me to do a leak down test.which I have never done in my 82 years ,but I know to do this you need to find TDC . Of each cyl. You are testing. Thank S MORT BOB

Thank you, Mart, for taking the time to explain and video both the cable tie and the head off method. I'm thinking that you would always want to make a pointer and pulley mark on every flathead you are rebuilding!!

You said you would and you did. Thanks Mart, nice work and a solid share. If anyone asks about it, I'll point to this.

Re: Ok you asked for it. Finding TDC by solid stop and cable tie method. Plus extras!
Thanks fellas. Looking at it I could have done it a bit better, but the fact that it is a bit rough and ready shows that anyone could do it. I tried to emphasise how it is important to develop the "feel" you need to snug against the stop (either type). If you do it a couple of times and it comes out the same you've probably done it right. I think it might be worthwhile holding the cable tie so it does not move between the two readings. One thing I didn't mention is how the rocking of the valves is more pronounced on motors that have more cam overlap.
Keep an eye open, I have some more "in production" lol. Mart. |

So I just viewed to TDC location using cable tie as this will be the method i will use when carrying out a leak down test as a follow up to a compression test.
Thanks Mart for the video which informs and clearly shows the procedure right through. Phil NZ |
