Temp Sending Unit Mounting

I see a similar temp sending unit question, but mine is a little different. I'm changing some things on my 57 with a 292, and want to pull that 1/2" factory sending unit out, and install my under-dash triple gauge pack. How do I get that little reducer bushing out, so I can simply thread my larger diameter sending unit directly into the head? I have the intake off now.


I put so Kroil on it, so that will help. I'm reluctant to try anything radical like my muffler gun!

The hole in the head for the bushing is not threaded. The bushing is a press fit and sits flush with the top of the hole. I don't suggest removing it unless it leaks around its outside edge.

For '57+ the threaded bushing should be 1/4 inch 'pipe thread', it's tapered and measured by the inside diameter of the male fitting.
The bushing can easily be drilled and re-threaded to 3/8 in. pipe thread, the same size as a '55/'56 Temp Sensor, if you have a 9/16 drill bit and the 3/8 pipe tap.

If you are measuring the outside diameter of the male threads of the new sending unit and getting approx 5/8 inch that is 3/8 inch 'pipe thread' size.

They sell tools for pulling the bushing out and you can get a new bushing with the larger size. CASCO the Tbird parts house has both, Carpenter has the bushing and may also have the tool. Not expensive

Thanks gents. I guess I'll try to reuse the current sending unit first. If that fails I'll see about pulling the bushing

A 'heads up'...
After drilling & re-threading the bushing for the larger sensor (1st photo above) we noticed the space behind the bushing was not as much as expected.
The larger diameter of the older sensor just barely fit between the internal sides of the casting where the holes are machined for the two rear-most pushrods.
