model a spare wheels
I'm shopping for a Model A pickup truck, and have noticed that most spare wheels are mounted on the driver's side, but have noticed the odd one mounted on the passenger side. Just wondering about the explaination for this. I'm new to the old truck world, but trying to educate myself as much as possible before making a purchase. Any input would be helpful, THX

Re: model a spare wheels
Most factory mounted fender spares were on the driver's side. Ford did make, and install passenger side fender spares as well; usually upon customer request. The Ford Dealers also installed the fender / bracket / spare on the passenger side as well - also at customer request.
Many fleet trucks had a need for the spare to be mounted on the passenger side instead of the drivers side; so Ford accommodated these customers. Also the fender-mounted spares could be ordered on BOTH sides of the car (Dual Sidemounts). Additionally, there were outside 'after-market' suppliers that also made side-mounted (both left and right) fenders for the Model A. So it is not at all unusual to find a pickup, or even a car chassis, with the spare tire mounted on the passenger side fender. - Doug Vieyra, Eureka, Calif |

Re: model a spare wheels
If the spare bracket to frame is riveted, it's most likely factory installed. If it's bolted, then the dealer or customer most likely installed it.
