Keen eye on my Parklane, Daves55. The bumper that was on it was in bad shape, and I really like the look of the exhaust cutouts. I’ve since upgraded the exhaust to include an H pipe and porter glass packs, utilizing the cutouts. I’ve been warned that there may be exhaust fumes in the cab so I will have to be careful about that and may need to change it out. I saw this bumper on another Parklane but don’t know if it was an option back then. I chose to eliminate the bumper guards because I like the look and it helps with the garage fit in my short city garage; I will probably take the front guards off too.

The picture was taken when the car was about to be hauled to a shop for a C4 transmission swap. Last summer I dropped in an engine that Jerry Christenson built for me here in Minnesota. Hopefully this spring will be the start of putting some serious miles on the car. It’s been dormant for about 40 years.

Wheels and tires are next. I do like the dog dish look, maybe with a beauty ring. I’d like to put a little wider tire on too, probably with a wide whitewall.

Very cool! What's especially great about that Mercury Voyager is that it appears to be a true "hardtop" two door wagon. Correct me if I'm wrong, but every Ranch Wagon, Country Sedan, Parklane or Del Rio I've seen could be described as a "sedan" wagon, with both side doors having a frame around the window that stays up when the window is down. I believe GM's Nomad and Safari have stainless window frames that go down with the window, but they aren't actual "hardtop" designs that create a single opening with a rear quarter window, like the Merc does. That big open feeling is what hardtops are all about. The Buick Caballero is a true hardtop, but it's a four door. Does that make the Voyager unique among two door wagons? Let me know if there are any others.

Oldmics would know for sure, but I think the Mercury was the only real hardtop 2 door wagon in the USA where there was no pillar until after the second row seat.

Here is a list of the various Mercury Station Wagons that were offered as Hardtop Station Wagons. Mercury Hardtop Station Wagons were only produced for four model years. The final year of this body style for Mercury was 1960, and no two doors were offered in the final year. The two door wagons were only available in 1957, 1958 and 1959. During these four model years, Mercury only offered Hardtop Station Wagons. As you can see from the attached list, the availability of two door models reduced each year, and when the 1960 models arrived, this body style had been deleted. Hope that this information helps.
Mercury Colony Park[/B] 1957-1960 (Four Doors)
Mercury Voyager 1957-1959 (Four Doors) 1957-1958 (Two Doors)
Mercury Commuter 1957-1959 (Two Doors) and 1957-1960 (Four Doors)

Here is a page from the 1957 Mercury Station Wagon Brochure, showing the Voyager models in four door and two door models. These are great looking wagons.

Mercury was the only manufactor to offer the two door hardtop station wagon.

It was availiable for the 3 years of production in the base line Commuter and also as the more decorated Voyager.

Production numbers for the two door Mercury wagons are

57 Commuter - (56A body type) - 4885
57 Voyager - (56B body type) - 2283

58 Commuter - 1912
58 Voyager - 568

59 Commuter - 1051
59 Voyager - NONE PRODUCED / ZERO

Both the Commuter and the Voyager were availiable for those 3 years in the 4 door offering (BORING)

Oldmics, does that round emblem on the front fender mean anything...….., like an engine option ?

You have a great eye for details !

That is a Turnpike Cruiser emblem signifying that the engine is a 368.

I still have yet to figure what a Turnpike Cruiser consisted of.

Was it a trim package? It obviously was an engine option.Could it have been a trim and interior pacage, dunno ?

My Dad had a 1957 4 door Turnpike Cruiser. It had the 368 engine in it.

If you notice on the blue wagon there is no emblem. That had a 312 in it.

Scicala, Oldmics and Mercman from Oz: Thanks for the info and beautiful brochure pics.

Oldmics, thanks for the pics of those beautiful wagons. Just how often do they show up for sale? I can't believe you had more than one! (I may have a new obsession. I already have a Ranch Wagon, so I'm predisposed.)

Here is another picture of that Red & White 1957 Mercury Commuter Two Door Hardtop Wagon taken on Queensland's Gold Coast. (Unfortunately, I don't have a colour photo of this car) Note that it has been converted to Right Hand Drive, which was compulsory back then. This one also has the later Quad Headlights, as seen on the Turnpike Cruisers. Notice the after-market full wheel trims. It is just a pity that this car was chopped up, as it would be a real head turner these days.

Turnpike Cruiser emblems signifyed the 368 engine.

The Voyager being the upscale 2 door wagon had the option to recieve the "Turnpike Cruiser" 368 engine and was badged accordingly.

The low line Commuter was never supposed to get the 368 (except my special machine) The Commuters got the 312 power plant and no badges.

1955 Courier-based ambulance- just picked this up a week or so ago, pretty much completely intact. Fired up for the first time in decades within the month, previoius owner swears the indicated 50k miles is actual, and I suspect he's right. 272 Y-block runs like a top. Mountain Green on the firewall was the original color prior to being shipped from the dealer to the coachbuilder for conversion and paint. St. Maries (pronounced St. Mary's) is a small town in Idaho, not far from Couer d'Alene.
